Stevens is cream of the crop

Victoria Stevens was the pick of Airienteers runners as she won her race on a busy weekend of events.

The finals of the middle and classic distance races in the Future Champions Cup, an event designed to develop the talents of young elite orienteers, were contested.

The middle distance race was held at Gilling Woods, near Helmsley in North Yorkshire, and England junior international Stevens of Ilkley impressed over the 3.8km of complex terrain to win the W20 elite gold medal.

Hector Haines, also of Ilkley, had a good run for fourth place in the M20 elite race (4.7km), while Ben Stevens was fourth as well at M21 and Florence Haines finished third at W14.

In other races, held as a regional ranking event, there was a rare one-two-three for Airienteers at M35 level over 4.7km.

Steve Watkins of Baildon led home Rolf Crooks and Martyn Broadest, with other podium places achieved by Heather Phipps (W35), Julia Crook (W40) and Peter Haines (M50).

In the classic final at Cawthorne & Keldy, north of Pickering, Hector Haines again impressed to come third at M20 elite level.

Ben Stevens was sixth at M21, Chloe Haines finished ninth in the 8.4km W18 race and Victoria Stevens sixth at W20 elite.

Watkins repeated his success at M35, winning the 10.5km course in 95.51, while other Airienteers podium positions in the age-group races in this national event were posted by Florence Haines (W14), Tony Thornley (M60), Shirley Wood (W50), Tom Crowther (M70), Susan Stevens (W55) and Edith Whalley (W75).

Top-20 finishes were recorded by Peter Haines (M50), Martyn Gill (M55), Robert Ker (M65), Keith Whalley (M75), Laura King (W10), Cerys Jones (W16), Sarah Haines (W21), Julia Crook (W40), Lindsey King (W45), Val Gilleard (W45), Gill Ross (W60) and Hilary Allen (W60).

The next venue for the Wednesday evening informal series is at Bowling Park, just off the A650 Wakefield Road in Bradford.

Details of this and other future competitions, as well as training and social events at this friendly club, can be found at www.aire.org.uk.
