Alwoods prove a knock-out pairing


Lister edged out Clayton B by a single point in the Pairs Knock-out, thanks to a great performance from John and Stella Allwood.

Trailing 16-9, they ran out 21-16 winners to set up a quarter-final match with Shipley Club A. Asa Briggs’ A and B teams both progressed, and will now face each other in the quarters.

Quarter-final draw (to be played on Thursday 23rd July): Bradford Moor v Tyersal at Horton, Clayton A v Shipley Club B at Bowling, Asa Briggs A v Asa Briggs B at Ladyhill, Lister v Shipley Club A at Peel.

Brighouse Sports A lost by two points to Thongsbridge in the quarter-final of the Yorkshire Cup.

Brighouse looked favourites to win throughout but Thongsbridge came strong at the end to set up a semi-final match with Alverthorpe – who defeated Spen Victoria by 49 points.

Crossroads and Cononley will contest the other semi-final, with wins over Horbury WMC and Cleckheaton Sports respectively.

Bradford’s last remaining hope in the Henry Taylor Cup, Wibsey, lost to Ossett Flying Horse by six points.

Wibsey have done well in this competition this season and pushed Ossett all the way.

In the Hutchinson Cup, Eccleshill and Shipley Club are still on course for a repeat of last year’s final, with both progressing to the semi-finals.

Eccleshill beat Saville Park from Castleford by 57 points to set up a last four date with Garforth Rec, who saw off the challenge of Tadcaster BC. Shipley Club were also easy winners, beating Hunslet Moor by 48 points, and will play Poplars S & SC.

Bradford play Leeds on Friday, in the next round of the Yorkshire County CGBA Veterans Inter District League.

The home match will be played at Pudsey Littlemoor, with the away match at Harehills Park. Bradford lost to Huddersfield 33-23 in their last match.

The Yorkshire Veterans Inter-City takes place in the Leeds district on Tuesday, with a 10am start.

In Pool A, Leeds play Sheffield and Huddersfield play Doncaster at Burley Park, with the winners of each game playing in the first semi-final at Bramley Park. In Pool B, Spen Valley play Castleford and Bradford play North Kirklees at Holbeck Moor, with the winners playing at Horsforth Woodside in the second semi-final.

The final will be played at Bramley Liberal Club at approximately 5pm. A squad of 14 will be picked for Bradford from the home and away teams of the Veterans Inter District.

The Bradford Pairs Merit, sponsored by City Graphics, takes place at Horton Park on Sunday, July 12 with a 10.30am start and scratch.

Asa Briggs A were the winners of the Ewart Lord Trophy with a 222-215 win over Holmfield.

Asa, giving their opponents a 24-point handicap advantage, started as favourites, but found Holmfield tougher than expected. It was down to a superb performance from Andy Denton to win the trophy for Asa.

The Bradford qualifying round of the British Parks Merit takes place next Friday – venue still to be decided.

The Four-a-side Knockout, sponsored by Kolorco (Print-ers) & Howard Smith Paper Group, reaches the last 16 stage tomorrow. Matches start at 6.45pm, with the teams named first to provide the jacks.
