Weekly angling lines

The dry weather continues, with all the rivers now distressingly short of water and running at what are possibly the lowest levels for some years.

The larger fish have retreated into the deeper pools where they see some more oxygenated water and relief from the bright sunshine.

With the low water, bright sunshine and algae on the surface, anglers have generally struggled.

Chris Stones, fishing with Freddie Bainbridge this week, had fish to 3lb from the Aire. Gareth Pedley, a Wild Trout Trust Conservation Officer, had a stunning fish of nearly 4lb.

At Shipton Lake, the carp seem to be starting to spawn, though they are still coming to nets. James Wall had a personal best bream of over 6½ lb from the lake, whilst Tony Stockdale netted another fine tench of about 6lbs.

Another angler had a little beauty of a mirror carp of 7lb 12oz, but the fish was nearly lost as it snagged with line left hanging in the trees.

Please will anglers report any major breakages, so that line can be cleared when we have a boat on the lake at a working party? James Lynch netted a fine mirror of about 19lb at Staveley.

BCAA is holding a fly-fishing Open Day at Inghey Bridge on June 2. The event opens at 10am and will include fishing demos, advice clinics, casting, riverfly monitoring, river walks and barbecue.

Entry is £5 and donations to the Wild Trout Trust.

BRADFORD & DISTRICT SEA ANGLING CLUB

Tope should be about as well as bull huss, whiting, dabs and mackerel.

BINGLEY ANGLING CLUB

Last Sunday's match was fished in bright conditions and clear water which kept the weights down but there were no dry nets. Results: 1.J.Martin 2.C.Dine 3.J.Clark. Coppice continues to improve with one member having nine tench on a short evening session.

BRADFORD NO1 A.A

Reece Lisle won last weekend's carp match at Knotford, which raised £130 for Marie Curie. Six carp put Reece in control before anyone else got off the mark, and were followed by another four fish on Sunday morning to give him a total weight of 176lbs 12oz.

Stephen Kelly caught a 16lbs 7oz fish which was enough for second place, followed by Chris O'Brien (15lbs 4oz) and Garry Walker (13lbs 14oz).

The biggest fish prize also went to Reece with 'Sunken Eyes' weighing 27lbs 7oz.

The Pauling Cup match on the Aire & Calder Canal at Pollington on Sunday was fished in blistering sunshine and most anglers struggled, catching just a couple of small fish on a stretch normally full of silvers.

Winner Fred Prudham certainly won't be complaining though after his 2lbs 13oz catch from the golden peg won him £267. Andy Jacques came second with 2lbs 7oz, while Howard Foster caught 2lbs 2oz.

Tench and bream are continuing to feed at Queen Mary's Ponds. Mal Brittain fished pole and paste last Tuesday for 4 tench with the biggest weighing 6lbs 11oz.

A reminder to members fishing Kirklees Lagoon that a key will be required for the gate from June 1. Details on how to get one can be found on page 21 of the yearbook.

SKIPTON A.A.

The Skipton Summer match fishing league got off to a flying start and Jason Aldis took the top honours with 1730g while Simon Chenier was second with 1370g. Other leading weights were: 3.Andrew Thomas 1260g; 4.Wayne Eason 1160g and Sam McIlroy 1120g.

In the second match at Barnoldswick on Sunday, the big bream were scarce and all weights consisted entirely of small roach or perch with the odd small skimmer bream.

Russell Heaton managed to record a first win of the series with 530g whilst Andrew Thomas was only 30g behind in second. Jason Aldis was third with 340g, Andy Wharton fourth with 280g and Graeme Waterfall fifth with 260g.

The next match will be fished on the Bradley swing bridge length of the canal on Sunday June 3.

Roach and bream have provided most of the sport on Whinnygill Reservoir. Russell Heaton appears to have had the best catch of late when he landed 3100g of roach and skimmers plus a solitary small perch in an evening session.

There was another win for Kippax Park on Saturday for P. Cromie, 104lb, 5oz. 2.T.Hewson 90lb 11oz. 3.S.Pearson 85lb 13oz.

The Sunday match at Moor Monkton Pools was won by M.Gallagher, 90lb 10oz. 2.S.Mazza 78lb 10oz. 3.L.Myers 78lb 3oz.

LISTERHILLS A..A

The midweek match was fished with fish more interested in maintaining the species than feeding. Result: 1.D.Jackson 30lb 1oz. 2.E.Harrison 21lb 13oz. 3.G.Reeday 13lb 8oz.

The result of Sunday's open match at Rodley held upstream on the nature reserve: 1.R.Movley 5lb 20z. 2.J.Mason 4lb 15oz. 3.B.Lowthian 4lb 14oz.

A reminder that there is no such thing as free fishing on the Leeds-Liverpool canal. Every length is under the control of one of the numerous clubs in the area.
