BRADFORD No 1 AA

A big drop in water temperature and a rising river was almost certainly a major factor for the poor catches in Sunday's big-money Calder Championship.

The title of Calder champion 2017 and the £620 first prize went to David Armitage, who caught two chub for 9lb 5oz from the Lillands Farm section, although he did lose two further chub and a trout.

Second place went to James Vickerman, who caught 40 small grayling on stick float from the Gravel Pits section for 8lb 3oz, while Shaun Tate caught two bream and two skimmers for 7lb 1oz and third place from below Cooper Bridge.

Hopefully a more settled forecast for this week may see a return of better catches for the final round of the Calder League this Sunday. It is between Punky's 8 (33 points) and Mirfield AC (31½) for the series team title, while Craig Turbitt leads the individual aggregate weight with 80lb 11oz, ahead of Steve Raper (71lb 6oz) and James Vickerman (64lb).

This weekend there will also be the final carp match of the year at Knotford, with anglers asked to meet at the lake at 7.30am tomorrow for the draw. The lake will be closed from 8pm on Friday until Sunday evening for the match.

Scott Friend's decision to have a quick overnight session on Knotford last Friday night proved well worthwhile, with the capture of a common carp weighing 32lb 4oz. It fell to a Calder Valley Bait and puts him into the lead for the Knotford Carp Cup with less than two weeks until the cut-off for this year's prize.

This fish topped off a week which had seen a good number of 20lb-plus carp caught from the lake, including a 24lb 3oz fish by Mike Priestman. Steve Kormes has also had seven large bream from the lake on feeder.

All 2017 memberships will be half price from October 1, including the joining fee, and will be available from Simon Freer (07714-662783) or online.

SKIPTON AA

Swine Lane once again seemed to live up to its name when the Skipton Winter League competitors fished there last Sunday in the first match of this year's series of eight. Apart from a spell of rain during the tackling-up period, conditions were more than reasonable, with little wind and not too bright or cool weather.

Everyone weighed in, although – the winner apart – catches consisted of small roach and perch.

A total of 16 anglers fished and there is the prospect of even more registering at the next match on the Broughton Road length of the canal at Skipton on Sunday, October 1. It will be the last time that competitors can register for the whole series, with final placings being decided on seven out of a maximum of eight results.

Result: 1 Jason Aldis was an easy winner 1620g (including large bream of about 1400g), 2 Dave Fenn 920g, 3 Ernest Ramsbotham 540g, 4 Steve Taylor 380g, 5 Keith Brown 320g, 6 Kenny Wright 310g.

Elsewhere, fishing appears to have been affected by a combination of the wet weather and some low overnight temperatures. For once, there are no reports of any outstanding catches at Whinnygill Reservoir, where the water is level with the spillway.

The River Aire is carrying extra water but is at a good level for angling. Fewer are fishing at the moment but some decent trout are still being caught, mainly on the worm. The upper reaches around Inghey Bridge down to the Funkirk length are the most popular sections.

Embsay Reservoir is fishing reasonably well, especially for tiger trout and perch, with plenty of fish being landed. The trout are putting up some great fights for their size, while the perch are more numerous but generally fall into the 100g-200g range.

Just over a week remains of the 2017 brown-trout season in Yorkshire, which closes at midnight on Saturday, September 30 on all rivers and streams, plus certain reservoirs where the fish can access feeder streams for the purpose of spawning later in the year.

Some anglers are found to be fishing at this venue before the cabin opens and have not used the honesty-box system of payment. In future, they will be charged double as it is well signposted.

Several carp of up to 24lb have been caught at Knotford. Pike are being caught at various venues, the best recorded being 24lb 4oz by Edward Harrison from the Ouse.
