BRADFORD No 1 AA

Nick Michael, who has just turned 18, produced one of the most surprising catches of the year to win the Hirst Cup members' match on the River Nidd at Cowthorpe on Sunday. On his first visit to the stretch, Nick fished stick-float and caster to catch four bream – a species which is extremely rare in the Nidd – along with a chub and a couple of pounds of dace.

Result: 1 Nick Michael 20lb 4oz, 2 James Vickerman 18lb 14oz, 3 Andy Jacques 9lb 2oz, 4 Ian Newby 9lb. Aggregate weights (with Raskelf match to go): 1 Andy Jacques 87lb 12oz, 2 James Vickerman 64lb 2oz, 3 Andy Fox 57lb 3oz, 4 Bill Scott 50lb 12oz.

Tickets for this Sunday's Calder Championship (draw at Railway Inn, Brighouse 9am, every stretch closed) are £15 from Simon on 01274-571175, £500 first prize and many back-up prizes, along with sections paid by default.

The River Ure at Roecliffe will be closed on Sunday for an outside booking. The next 24-hour carp match at Knotford is on September 23-24. Lake will be closed on the Friday night prior.

Intermittent showers and falling temperatures have made fish more active over the past week, with many moving off the bottom to feed. Canal waters have begun to clear and pike to double figures have been spotted in shaded swims. Overall fishing conditions continue to improve along most stretches of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, with roach shoaling up at some sites. Leaches Bridge, west of Riddlesden, remains popular and productive. One member landed 20 roach and five perch in three hours using maggot and bread punch. As water plants and other vegetation recede, anglers have reported improved fishing conditions on Roberts Pond, where roach and perch succumbed to maggot and worm baits. Meanwhile, on the River Aire, 42 fish were caught in a session at Utley – mainly chub, roach and dace, attracted by mixed maggot and hemp combinations. Most of the fish were of modest size, although larger specimens were caught closer to Kildwick. The club noted a sharp rise in the number of people viewing their YouTube videos, mostly created by Darren Watson, an accomplished fisherman and keen amateur film-maker who regularly adds footage. So far more than 84,000 people have watched the films.

Once again the weather let down competitors in the last match of the Peter Hart Memorial Series on Whinnygill Reservoir last Sunday morning. The temperature had dropped during the night and a keen westerly wind was blowing during the three-hour match, resulting in relatively poor sport. Result: 1 Bob Fenn 970g (good bag of roach and perch from quarry corner), 2 Graeme Waterfall 960g (single bream midway through match), 3 Simon Chenier 620g (mixed catch), 4 Dave Fenn 420g, 5 Russell Heaton 90g. Four competitors failed to catch. Prior to match day, Whinnygill had been fishing well, with roach, bream, perch, carp, rudd and brown trout readily taking red maggot, bread and worm. One angler had a catch of 12kg in the space of about three hours. Perch have been providing good sport at Embsay Reservoir, where trout are the normal quarry. A fish-a-cast on the road length has produced some good weights, including fish to around 450g. Brown, rainbow and tiger trout have also been caught. Heavy showers nearly every day have put plenty of extra water into the River Aire and culminated in minor flooding of riverside fields on Monday. A forecast of even more heavy rain could end in some serious flooding and loss of some of this year's fry. Skipton Winter League competitors start their eight-match series on Sunday on the canal at Swine Lane, Riddlesden. Hopefully, this match will not follow the last two years' opening matches at the same venue, which provided rather poor sport. Registration for the league will take place at the first two matches, fee £7. Match-day entry, which includes peg fees, costs a further £8 and will pay out three or four prizes, plus two section prizes. The league is open to all anglers and further details may be obtained from Bill Davenport on 01756-799671 or 07581-082576.

Knotford has produced a few carp over 20lb and the Polo Pond has also come up with carp to upper doubles.
