DEWSBURY Tog team-mates Phil Cawser and Ivan Lewis notched a double triumph in the Northern Masters Veterans' tournament in Preston.

Cawser, still on a high after his heroics for Yorkshire over-60s, carried off the singles title in the over-60s section.

The No 4 seed easily came through his group and also eased through the first two rounds before meeting fifth seed Brian Hill from Lincolnshire, with Cawser coming out on top 11-2 in the fifth.

In the semi-finals, Cawser was up against top seed Maurice Newman, who had just put out another Tog player in Steve Kosmowsky, and once again Cawser triumphed in five games.

Bill Grant of South Yorkshire emerged from the other half of the draw but Cawser took the title in straight games.

Meanwhile, Lewis had an amazing weekend as he claimed three titles.

He won the over-50s men's doubles with Keith Williams from Lancashire and the next day began what was an exhausting spell by winning the over-40s consolation singles before turning his attentions to the over-50 singles.

The unseeded Lewis was an outsider for the title and began his quest with a five-game victory over Shaun Bibby, also from Dewsbury Tog.

A real test awaited in round two in the form of No 3 seed and former winner Adrian Pilgrim from Wales but Lewis won in five games.

He then enjoyed 3-0 wins over Geoff Salter and Mark Evans before meeting his doubles partner and No 2 seed Williams in the last four.

Lewis was on a roll now and won 3-1 to set up his 11th and final singles match of the day against fifth seed Thomas Rzeszotko from Cheshire.

At 2-1 down, Lewis was up against it – but he dug deep and came through 12-10 in the deciding game to cap a memorable performance.
