SKIPTON AA

It’s all over barring the Christmas Cheer match but at least the Skipton Winter League’s final fixture finished on a high with over 15kg of good-quality fish turning up last Sunday on the Long Ing length of the canal at Barnoldswick.

Most of the fish caught were decent-sized roach averaging about 230g (0:8:0), plus three big bream and a similar number of smallish pike. Average-sized roach and perch made up some good back-up weights, and all of the competitors had fish to weigh in at the end of the three-hour match.

Result: 1 Danny Bolland 2960g (6lb 8.4oz), 12 roach and a bream; 2 Andy Wharton 2320g (5:1.12) all roach; 3 Bob Fenn 2080g (4:9.4) couple of good bream; 4 Andrew Thomas 1870g (4:2.0), two pike; 5 Terry Bolland 1660g (3:10.8), mainly small fish; 6 Ernest Ramsbotham 1220g (2:11.0), good roach on the worm.

Final individual positions: 1 Dave Fenn 122pts, 2 Rob Thornton 113, 3 Kenny Wright 99, 4 Jason Aldis 97, 5 Danny Bolland 96, 6 Andrew Thomas 78.

Pairs result: 1 D&T Bolland 4620g (10:2.8), 2 Thomas & Wharton 4190g (9:3.8), 3 D&R Fenn 2940g (6:7.8), 4 Ramsbotham & Young 1220g (2:11.0), 5 Wright & Thornton 1030g (2:4.4), 6 Leatt & Mawson 700g (1:8.12).

Final pairs positions: 1 Wright & Thornton 64pts, 2 D&R Fenn 63, 3 D&T Bolland 47, 4 Thomas & Wharton 46, 5 Aldis & Heaton 44.

Individual knockout final: Danny Bolland bt Dave Fenn 2960g-860g.

On Sunday, the Christmas Cheer on the Marina length at Barnoldswick will be the last of this season’s matches. There is no entry fee but competitors should take a prize to the value of about £8.

If conditions are right, this length can produce some outstanding weights, and in November 2012 a similar match was won by Skipton’s Darren Wright with almost 19.9kg (44lb) of bream averaging 1140g (2:8).

This is still the league’s individual record weight for a three-hour match, and all the bream fell to halibut pellets.

KEIGHLEY AC

The River Aire continues to provide excellent opportunities for members. Two tested the waters at Kildwick and landed a selection of trout, chub and grayling, tempted by a combination of maggot and worm.

There have been several reports of grayling shoals at a number of quick-water swims along the river.

Bream continue to be the main sport along the canal, with small shoals of skimmers taking up positions in swims alongside wooded areas between Riddlesden and Bradley.

Meanwhile, the club are pushing forward with plans to build a stile to improve access at Utley by the bridge at Keighley Golf Club, following the installation of fencing and a new gate. All anglers and other walkers are urged to use the gate when approaching the riverside.

Club membership books have been prepared in time for Christmas and are now on sale. Contact the local tackle shop or secretary Dennis Freeman for more information.

LISTERHILLS AA

Membership books for 2017 will be available from the usual outlets within the next week. There is an increase of £1 for senior members, making the canal membership £16. Ladies, disabled and OAPs subscriptions remain the same at £8, while there is a reduction in the price for juniors to £4. Catches of small roach have come from the canal at Apperley Bridge and Newley, with bread punch and pinkie the most productive baits.

Results of last Sunday's Christmas Cheer match on the River Aire: 1 C Dine 8lb, 2= B Leonard, A Newman 4lb 8oz, 4 A Greenwood 4lb 4oz. There will be a series of work parties at Coppice Pond early next year to continue the fencing work and planting. The first will be on Saturday, January 7, and then they will be roughly every three weeks – all volunteers welcome. With the milder weather, the canal has been fishing well, with good catches reported from the boats at Crossflatts.

BRADFORD SEA AC

Our last general meeting of the year, which is our Christmas Cheer meeting, will be next Tuesday at the New Inn, East Bierley, which is now open after refurbishment. This is the Secret Santa get-together, where everybody brings a raffle prize. Hopefully, there will also be some news on next year's trips. Boats haven't been able to get out at times on the east coast owing to bad weather, and it is very quiet on the west coast, apart from the Mersey, where there are plenty of cod and whiting being caught.
