BRADFORD No 1 AA

Following the lake being frozen for most of the week prior to the match, and the water temperature near freezing for the match itself, carp were hard to come by for the 35 anglers fishing the opening round of the Raskelf Winter Series on Sunday. Result: 1 Simon Foster 10lb 2oz (8 F1 carp, 35pts), 2 Fred Prudham 7lb 2oz (34pts), 3= Graham Jackson, Dawid Moska 6lb 2oz (32½pts), 5 Simon Freer 4lb 14½oz (four tench). The next round will take place on Sunday, January 29.

Tickets for this Sunday's Open match on the River Nidd at Cowthorpe are available from Simon on 01274-571175. Entry is £15, draw 9am on the roadside.

The 2017 match calendar can now be found on the club website. There will be open matches at Roecliffe and Cowthorpe, the usual Lower Aire Championship and Calder Championship, as well as members' matches on the Aire and Calder Canal, Beal, Cowthorpe and Raskelf. After the success of the first carp match at Knotford this year, next year there will be two – in May and September.

Next year's membership is expected to be on sale from the usual outlets from a week before Christmas, with prices remaining the same as this year. New members are welcome. Night permits for Knotford and Kirklees will also go on sale at the same time for existing permit holders, before going on general sale a month later.

Bradford No 1 hoodies, polo shirts and hats are for sale on the club website, with most sizes available to be delivered in time for Christmas.

SKIPTON AA

Recent catches on the canal have been disappointing, to say the least, with several pleasure and match anglers having dry nets at the end of two or three hours' fishing. No particular length has been worse than any other, although there has been an indication that the basin at Skipton may well be showing signs of improvement.

One angler fishing there last week landed a few good fish, including roach, bream and perch, all taken on the tail-end of a lobworm after red and natural maggots failed to attract anything. In years gone by, the basin has produced some excellent perch fishing over Christmas but only when the temperature has been above average for the time of year.

Skipton Winter League competitors will be fishing the last match in this season's seven-match series on the Long Ing length at Barnoldswick this Sunday and initial signs are that it may be yet another gruelling three hours, judging from anglers fishing the length last weekend. However, the forecast is for a big increase in the temperature to around the 12 centigrade mark towards the end of the week and this may trigger a feeding frenzy.

Dave Fenn has already secured the individual championship and is in a good position, together with his father Bob, to win the pairs championship. David may also add the individual knockout trophy to his tally, fishing against Danny Bolland in the final. The pairs league table published last week contained some errors due to the best-six-results rule and the true positions will be made known before the start on Sunday.

Whinnygill Reservoir has now received the final batch of fish to conclude this year's restocking programme at the water – 230 good quality roach measuring 20-25cm were introduced last week to join the rudd, tench, crucian carp, bream and gudgeon stocked a couple of weeks earlier.

Bailiff Simon Chenier could not wait to sample the new fish but his efforts were in vain and only brown trout could be attracted. Fishing the pole, Simon landed four fish estimated to weigh between 3-4lb each.

L Wilson caught a pike of 18lb at Wintersett.

LISTERHILLS AA

At this time of year, when some still waters and canals may be frozen over, anglers should not attempt to break the ice with objects that cannot be retrieved. The River Aire has produced a few decent catches of grayling, also a few trout which are out of season and must be returned immediately. Merit Trophy winner: M Paton. Winter Series leading positions at halfway stage: 1 E Harrison 50pts, 2 J Harrison 36 (superior weight), 3 G Reeday 36, 4 P Woods 25 (superior weight), 5 A Bowater 25, 6 D Jackson 24 (superior weight), 7 B Mason 24.

BRADFORD SEA AC

Our last general meeting of the year, which is our Christmas Cheer, will be on Tuesday, December 20. This is our Secret Santa get-together, to which everybody brings a raffle prize. Hopefully Dave will have some news on next year's trips. Grimsby is fishing well at the moment, with decent bags of cod being caught, and inshore at Whitby a few cod and whiting are being landed.

BINGLEY AC

Due to the colder weather, there are no catch reports this week. Sunday's Christmas Cheer match will be fished on the River Aire, split between the Myrtle Park and Gas Works lengths, draw 9am in the Ferrands car park. To book on, contact Tony Greenwood on 07971-428678.
