* GARY Ellis (Whitefield) won the Spen Masters, sponsored by P&I Hopkins Butchers, for the first time after defeating Lee Johnstone (Warrington) 21-10 in the final.

The dreadful weather failed to put a dampener on the night, with Ellis once again proving that he is still the main man.

Ellis would never put Spen down as his favourite green but he still finds a way to bag the top prize.

After a close game (21-19) against Bill Burlinson (Warrington) in the quarter-finals, which left Ellis shaking his head as to how he had got over the winning line, he slipped into another gear to easily see off the challenges of Andrew Cairns and Johnstone.

The presentation was made by David Arnold, who is stepping down after seven fantastic years of running the Masters, as well as the Winter Sweeps. Whoever takes over will have a hard act to follow.
