DANNY Teale was crowned Spen Merit champion after beating Marc Armitage (Littlemoor) 21-16 in the final.

Teale came through a tough last-16 match against Michael Rhodes (Cleckheaton Sports), edging it 21-19, before wins over Ossett Flying Horse team-mate Graham Blenkinsop 21-13 and Andrew Page (Cleckheaton Sports) 21-10 put him through to the title decider.

Armitage made it through with victories over Mark Dobson (Pudsey) 21-19, Les Mitchell (Hightown Club) 21-15 and Graham Higgins (Ossett Flying Horse) 21-17.

The final, between two of the best juniors in the area, could have gone either way but it was Teale who captured his first major title.

Newton started with a bye following a no-show from Steve Davies (Liverpool) and added wins against Joel Abdy (Lower Hopton) 21-16 and Greg Smith (West Bromwich) 21-16.

Johnstone made it through with triumphs over John Hanson (Blackpool) 21-15, Dave McDermott (Wirral) 21-15 and Jack Hargreaves (Hyde) 21-20.
