GARY Ellis (Whitefield) has become Cleckheaton Sports Classic champion for a sixth time.

He came through a tough field to defeat Gareth Lally (Crossgates) 21-10 in a one-sided final.

Ellis had earlier beaten Gareth Coates (Halifax) 21-16, Harry Seehra (Lower Hopton) 21-12 and Robert Hitchen (Halifax) 21-16.

Lally had been as impressive in making it to the decider with wins over Ian Brine (Rothwell) 21-15, Simon Coupe (Preston) 21-19 and Neil Slattery (Crosland Moor) 21-8.

Ben Gloag (Manchester) and Wayne Ditchfield (Eccleston) were week one qualifiers in the 2016 Spen Masters, sponsored by P&I Hopkins Butchers.

Gloag made it through to finals night with wins over Michael Sweeney (Morton House) 21-14, Chris Kelly (Sheffield) 21-12 and Kieren Smith (Crossgates) 21-20, while Ditchfield beat Steven Gilroy (Crossgates) 21-16, Gareth Gwilliam (Manchester) 21-14 and Kevan Shaw (Bolton) to also progress.

Qualifying continues tomorrow evening (Friday), with Pudsey trio Stuart Hanson, Andy Hodgson and James Hanson in action, along with Littlemoor bowlers Mark Allman and Glen Pratt.
