FERN Beaumont (Paddock C&B and Broad Oak) defeated clubmate Leah Keyworth 21-7 in the Yorkshire Crown Green Bowling Association's under-18 girls' merit at Low Moor Harold.

Freda, Fern's grandma, is a former county bowler, while Fern's brother Matthew is a former county junior.

Beaumont, herself a regular county junior and senior, took an 8-0 lead in the final before Keyworth stepped in with a couple of singles.

However, unlike her semi-final, when she alternated the jack with Eleanor Broadley (Almondbury BC) before winning 21-20, Beaumont never lost the lead.

Keyworth's semi-final against Amy Tobin (Whitkirk) was also nip and tuck before Keyworth edged it 21-20.

Several of the finalists, from what was a strong entry of 20, will be going through to the British Crown Green Junior Ladies' event later in the season.

Quarter-finals: Sophie Worral (New Farnley) 10 Fern Beaumont (Paddock C&B and Broad Oak) 21, Eleanor Broadley (Almondbury BC) 21 Georgia Hewitt (Overthorpe) 9, Megan Burkinshaw (Wakefield BC) 17 Leah Keyworth (Paddock C&B and Broad Oak) 21, Lucy Stephens (Brockholes) 20 Amy Tobin (Whitkirk) 21. Semi-finals: Beaumont 21 Broadley 20, Keyworth 21 Tobin 20. Final: Beaumont 21 Keyworth 7.
