BRADFORD CITY AA

The weather has generally been mixed this week, with a bit of rain to freshen the rivers, though water levels remain low. Trout anglers on the rivers have found the going tough, though some fish have been coming to net. Sadly, this week saw a major fish kill on the River Aire at Cononley. The Environment Agency found no pollution and felt the incident was due to weather conditions. However, local anglers report some observations which seem to suggest other causes. Club still waters continue to report good catches for some anglers. At Shipton Lake, Mick Atkinson had over 200lb of bream, roach to the 1lb mark and a tench of over 5lb. All fish fell to 8mm halibut pellet and halibut groundbait, about 30 yards from the roadside. At Staveley Lakes, anglers have seen some nice carp, with Carl White, Andy Birkinshaw and Brian Bromfield among successful members. The next BCAA match is tomorrow on the River Ure at Dunsforth. Places are still available and can be booked via Rodney Brooksbank on 07875-275749. There is a working party at Shipton Lake tomorrow and on Sunday. If you are willing to volunteer, even if only for a couple of hours, contact Terry Duncalf on 07988-681654.

SKIPTON AA

The River Aire locally was hit by fish kill last week that was at first thought to have been caused by an influx of raw sewage as storm water overflows operated following an hour-long thunderstorm on June 7. Most of the dead fish were at Cononley, where many thousands of minnows, stone loach, bullheads and gudgeon were to be seen in the shallow water above and below the road bridge. Some larger fish, such as pike, were also killed and a few trout, grayling and chub appeared to have succumbed but were difficult to identify in the murky deeper water. The Environment Agency was quick to respond and surveyed the river from Skipton to Kildwick the following morning. Luckily, it appeared that mainly small fish had died, with the worst fatalities between Bradley and Cononley. No pollution was identified and the cause was put down to atmospheric conditions following the thundery weather. Result of Peter Hart Memorial Trophy at Whinnygill Reservoir: 1 Wayne Eason 1330g (one trout, three perch, one skimmer), 2 John Preston 100g (two perch), 3 Bill Davenport 50g (two gudgeon).

KEIGHLEY AC

Coarse fishing resumed on the River Aire this week as the fish-spawning season came to an end, with anglers eager to test their river skills with traditional maggot and cereal baits. However, some anglers might find stretches of the Aire could pose an added challenge after flooding earlier in the year flushed out familiar swims, carving new depths which created fresh contours on the river bed. The floods also deposited debris and other submerged hazards. The recent climate has boosted plant life along the river and some committee members have begun strimming bank vegetation near the bridge at Keighley Golf Club. Pegs are also being cut for the new season.

The trip that took place from Rhyl on Wednesday was a great success, with dabs, whiting, lsds and bull huss being the main fish caught. Mackerel were hard to find but we eventual caught some for bait. Altogether 209 fish were caught. A magnificent haul of 28 bull huss, three of them hitting the 10lb mark, were caught by Paul Lonsdale, Rob Wadsworth and Brian Clarkson, who also had a thornback ray of 6lb. But the highlight of the trip was a fantastic tope of 25lb by Paul Lonsdale – the first tope caught out of Rhyl on the boat 'Goldilocks' this year.
