STUART King had a great weekend as he captured the Shipley Classic, sponsored by HH Birch & Son Ltd and RSK Fastenings, on Friday evening and then on Sunday won the Ben Ramsden Merit title, which was also held at Shipley.

King came through a tough field to become Shipley Classic champion for the second time, having first won it in 2013.

First up was a quarter-final against Steven Gilroy (Crossgates) and it was Gilroy who made the better start to lead 7-4, before a 13 break put King in control on his way to a 21-10 victory.

The Asa Briggs bowler then used his better knowledge of the green to romp home 21-8 in the semi-finals over Callum Wraight (Shrewsbury) to set up a final with last year's runner-up James Wilcox (Crossgates), who had beaten Lower Hopton duo Joel Abdy 21-19 and Graeme Wilson 21-13.

The final was tight throughout but King held his nerve from 17-17 as he found the four chalks he needed to become champion.

Quarter-finals: Steven Gilroy (Crossgates) 10 Stuart King (Asa Briggs) 21, Chris Mordue (Pudsey) 19 Callum Wraight (Shrewsbury) 21, Dave Fisher (Denby Grange) 20 Graeme Wilson (Lower Hopton) 21, James Wilcox (Crossgates) 21 Joel Abdy (Lower Hopton) 19. Semi-finals: King 21 Wraight 8, Wilson 13 Wilcox 21. Final: King 21 Wilcox 17.

A total of 38 bowlers took part in the Ben Ramsden Merit, which was moved to Northcliffe & Shipley Club only a few weeks ago.

King was in terrific form again, conceding only 27 chalks in his five matches as he took the title for the first time.

Having won his opening game against Jason Greenwood (West Bradford) 21-8 on Northcliffe, he quickly disposed of Iain Brown (Wibsey) 21-6 on the Shipley Club green to set up a quarter-final against Gregg Fairhead (West Bradford).

King was leading 8-7 before he stepped on the gas to leave Fairhead stranded on eight and progress to the semi-finals, where Jordan Brown (Wibsey) – who had just seen off last year's champion Chris Wilson (Clayton) 21-18 – was awaiting him. Yet Brown was no match for King either in a stunning 21-4 victory.

The final looked like it would be a close affair but King showed his class as he found a mark that left-handed Tate could not find, racing into an 18-0 lead.

Tate had tried everything to get King off his land, only for a lucky strike to cannon off his own short bowl to run the jack through to score a single.

Three ends later and the match was over, with King winning 21-1 to take the only Bradford competition that had eluded him.

* Neil Nicholson (Farsley) won the Ian Forder Memorial Competition at Baildon, beating Nicky Bastow (Guiseley) 21-10 in the final.
