ARCHIE Dunne produced some outstanding performances when he powered to victory in his age group 50 metres freestyle and 50m backstroke at the Amateur Swimming Association's North East Region BAGCAT Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

The 13-year-old City of Bradford member's time of 26.39sec in the freestyle final was not only a personal best but a new club record and gained him a place at this year's British Championships, to be held in Sheffield later this summer.

Not content with his gold-medal winning performances, he went on to claim silver in the 50m breaststroke in 34.50sec and bronze in the 100m freestyle in a personal best time of 59.81sec, the first time he has been under a minute.

Archie also claimed bronze in the 50m butterfly in a best time of 29.42sec and rounded off an exceptional weekend by placing 11th in the 200m freestyle.

Also in the 13 years age group, Archie Minto narrowly missed a medal when he was fourth place in the 100m butterfly, and he was also sixth in the 100m backstroke and seventh in the 50m butterfly and 200m butterfly.

He was also first reserve finalist in the 50m backstroke. All of his swims were personal bests and he impressed the coaches by increasing his best times from heat to finals on every occasion.

Sophia Basaraba, swimming in the 11-12 years age group, once again showed her potential in her favoured events by placing sixth in the 200m backstroke and seventh in the 100m, with the latter meaning she was the fastest 11-year-old.

Ella Stabler was City's other finalist with eighth place in the 11-12 years 400m individual medley.

City's now have four representatives at this summer's British Championships and Summer Nationals – Abigail Shuttleworth, Archie Dunne, James Lund and Samuel Naylor.

All these swimmers train on the Bradford Aquatics Competition programme under the guidance of coaches Andy Pearce and Sarah Fisher.
