LAWN Tennis Association president Cathie Sabin and Yorkshire LTA chairman John Crowther, who is a former LTA chief executive, were among the top officials who made a whirlwind tour of clubs in Yorkshire that were affected by the Boxing Day floods.

After visiting clubs in York and Wetherby, their last stop-off was at Salts Tennis Club, where they were welcomed by club chairman Jim Dyer, Bradford Parks LTA chairman Pat Hardaker and YLTA committee members John Ramsbottom and Don Stewart.

The dignitaries were shown photos of the damage at Salts, and were also told about it, and Cathie was appalled at the carnage.

However, she was glad that the financial input from the LTA, YLTA and Sport England enabled Salts and others to not only do the repair work but also get up and running earlier than anticipated.

Salts TC also applied for and received funding from other local flood relief agencies, and local clubs and individual players from the Bradford Parks League sent donations and commiserations for which the club and their members are very grateful.

Cathie would also like to thank all committees and members of all the clubs hit by the floods for working so hard to get themselves back in working order because without these committed people, grass-roots tennis would not be viable.
