BRADFORD Veterans' first team faced a crucial final round of fixtures as they looked to preserve their Division One status in the Yorkshire League.

They began the day in bottom spot as they had lost their previous five matches, but they were boosted by having Phil Cawser in their line-up.

He had missed the first two rounds and was to play a prominent part in the day's events.

Bradford had their fate in their own hands as they had to play their two nearest rivals.

York had one point and Harrogate two, and a must-win game against York came first.

Cawser set the tone for Bradford with three singles, Ian Gomersall took two and Sarfraz Khan one as Bradford won

7-3.

Harrogate were next and, despite a treble from Richard Whiteley, the match was a draw as Cawser won two, Gomersall and Khan one each, and Bradford won a vital doubles through Cawser and Gomersall.

Bradford were now safe as York lost their final match but they finished the day unbeaten following a creditable draw against third-placed Huddersfield.

Cawser took three more singles, including a great win over Tim Dyson from 2-0 down.

Richard Priestley added the other two, but Cawser was the star, finishing the day with eight wins from nine as Bradford finished above both York and Keighley.

It was a different story, however, for Bradford-2 as they faced a promotion decider in Division One at Hull-3.

The home side were one point ahead of Bradford and were in top form, while the Bradford trio of Phil Mann, Paul Mckrieth and Fazal Hussain were below par and crashed to a 10-0 defeat to finish in third.
