KOBEN O'Driscoll has become a national champion – just a year after his first competitive dive.

The City of Bradford Esprit Diving Club member won a gold medal at the English Schools' National Championships at the London Aquatics Centre.

He completed a clean sweep of medals for Esprit, with Holly Waxman getting a silver and Jake Passmore a bronze.

Koben, who trains at Shipley Pool, performed four dives and recorded a personal best of 141 points, securing top spot on the podium by getting 45 points with his final dive – an inward one and a half somersault.

The Eldwick Primary School pupil joins an illustrious list of previous champions, including Olympic and Commonwealth medal winner Pete Waterfield, who was there in person to congratulate the winning divers.

Koben was introduced to the sport after being spotted as part of the Bradford Esprit Talent Investment Scheme, which assessed pupils from number of Bradford primary schools.

He has benefited enormously from dedicated coaching support from Becky Lee and Grace Alsancak.
