FORMER Woodhouse Grove pupil Naomi Broady is through to the quarter-finals of the ASB Classic in New Zealand after winning a controversial clash with Jelena Ostapenko.

The 25-year-old British No 3 saved two match points in reeling off six straight games to defeat the Latvian 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 in Auckland.

She also called for the world No 84 to be disqualified by referee Blaze Trifunovski after Ostapenko threw her racquet in the second-set tie-break and it appeared to hit a ball boy.

World No 122 Broady, who notched her first-ever win over a top-20 player in the first round when she beat former world No 1 Ana Ivanovic, looked an unlikely winner when she was broken three times in the opening set and faced her first match point when she trailed 5-2 in the second.

But saving that match point inspired an outstanding revival as she claimed four of the next five games to force a tie-break, which she won 7-4 to set up a decider.

The Latvian thought she had the game wrapped up after an impressive start to the third set but wasted another match point at 5-3, Broady rallying from 5-1 behind to win the next six games for victory.

Broady, now based in Stockport, was almost in tears as she pleaded with Trifunovski to end the match but the referee allowed proceedings to continue, although it was the Briton who had the last laugh before giving her opponent a verbal volley after shaking hands.

On her comeback, Broady said: "I was so tired. At 5-2 down in the second set, I started getting cramp and I thought 'oh no', but the crowd just kept getting behind me.

"I just thought 'keep going, one point at a time' and somehow I managed to get all the way back.

"I think she was tightening up a little bit and that allowed me to get a better strike on the ball. I don't know what just happened really."
