TOM Whitwam of Heckmondwike retained his Northern Under-13 Grand Prix title in Bury, with his 14-point tally also ranking him second in Britain.

Peter Bradbury made his debut for the West Yorkshire club, scoring a respectable five points.

Heckmondwike under-13 scores: Whitwam 14, Will Naylor 12, Bradbury 5.

Despite promoting Whitwam from the juniors and giving newcomer John Mawby a reserve berth, Heckmondwike still managed to stay off the bottom in the Northern Fours match.

Stockport led the way on 56 points ahead of Bury Comets (49), with Heckmondwike finishing fifth on 26 points ahead of Hull (25).

The thrills-and-spills nature of the heats led to Stockport rider Matt Lush fracturing a collarbone after a tumble, Whitwam just avoiding the carnage.

Scores: Stockport 56, Bury Comets 49, Bury Meteors 39, Astley & Tyldesley 33, Heckmondwike 26 (Richard Wells 9, Mick Knowles 8, Justin Naylor 4, Tom Whitwam 3, John Mawby 2), Hull 25.

Mawby also made his debut in the Division Two clash, being the day's joint-winner with 15 points, despite also taking a tumble.

Junior Grand Prix results – Under-tens: Bella Naylor 12, Harvey Wells 12.
