CHRIS Wilson has won the Ben Ramsden Merit, defeating Clayton clubmate Paul Gill 21-11 in the final.

No-one came close to beating the champion, who only conceded 28 chalks from the quarter-finals onwards.

In the last eight, Wilson beat Trevor Worsman (Drighlington) 21-7 before a comfortable 21-10 semi-final victory over Ken Gilroy (Eccleshill) set up a final with Gill.

Wilson was always in control there to win his first Bradford League competition – and with the form he showed on Sunday, it won't be his last.

The venue was moved this year to Northcliffe and Shipley Club in the hope that entries would increase. However, only 26 took part in this once-prestigious Bradford competition.

The executive committee will now look at options as to how to improve entries in all Bradford League competitions.

Quarter-finals: Trevor Worsman (Drighlington) 7, Chris Wilson (Clayton) 21; Ken Gilroy (Eccleshill) 21, Robert Hiley (Asa Briggs) 7; Stuart King (Asa Briggs) 11, Mark Regan (Brighouse Sports) 21; Adam Marsden (Eccleshill) 15, Paul Gill (Clayton) 21. Semi-finals: Wilson 21, Gilroy 10; Regan 16, Gill 21. Final: Wilson 21, Gill 11.

* Graham Hirst (Lower Hopton) has retained his West Riding Merit title.

After an opening-round win against Frank Griffin (Mirfield Old Bank), Hirst came up against the first of three Spen Victoria bowlers in the last 16, defeating Richard Crowther 21-15.

In the quarter-finals, the in-form Hirst quickly saw off Adam Douglas (Kirkheaton Con) 21-9 to set up a semi-final with Scott Tattersley, which Hirst edged 21-18.

Spen's Michael Maguire, who saw off Paul Firth (Lower Hopton) 21-10 in his semi-final, was waiting for Hirst in a decider which could have gone either way, the holder taking it 21-19.

Quarter-finals: Graham Hirst (Lower Hopton) 21, Adam Douglas (Kirkheaton Con) 9; Scott Tattersley (Spen Victoria) 21, Mark Ellis (Spen Victoria) 13; Paul Firth (Lower Hopton) 21, Robert Dunford (Morton House) 15; Michael Maguire (Spen Victoria) 21, Richard Brook (Mirfield Old Bank) 17. Semi-finals: Hirst 21, Tattersley 18; Firth 10, Maguire 21. Final: Hirst 21, Maguire 19.
