CLAYTON Rugby Club claimed a unique team treble as they added Bradford billiards' prestigious Moorhouse Shield to the South Bradford League team knockout and league title.

The victory was the club's first in the Moorhouse since they won the Centenary final in 2008 and was third time lucky as opponents Great Horton Conservative Club had beaten them in the last two finals.

Captain Paul Ascough started well for Clayton with a break of 42, but Aussie McGann kept plugging away to keep in touch before a further break of 39 extended Ascough's lead and ended with a 200-131 victory.

Team-mate Hughie Donnelly and Great Horton's Terry Crawshaw swapped the lead on several occasions without either player hitting any breaks of note, but it was Donnelly who secured a 200-159 success.

Bradford Championship finalist Steve Wilman (Great Horton) looked to pull away early on, but Clayton's Nick Hale held on to his coat-tails until Wilman started to put together some consistent breaks, the highest being a 39, to lead by over 100.

Hale rallied late on but it was the Great Horton player who took the spoils 200-136.

The final match was crucial, and Clayton's Mick Lythgow was fully focused, looking to match what his opposite number on the other table was doing.

Some consistent early breaks in the first half of the match against Dave Western set the tone, and a break of 56 stretched Lythgow's lead to over 100.

Western was below par on the night, but take nothing away from an excellent performance from Lythgow, who wrapped up a 200-53 victory and with it the Championship trophy.
