DARREN Tetley today eyed his biggest date as a boxing pro and insisted: I must not freeze.

Tetley has been handed a massive opportunity when he fights a six-rounder on the undercard of Josh Warrington’s next sell-out show at the Leeds Arena.

For the unbeaten Holme Wood welterweight, the September 5 show represents the chance to really make a name for himself locally. He does not intend to blow it.

Tetley said: “I did well as an amateur but never got that recognition coming into the pros. I’ve had to do everything the hard way so far.

“I’m hoping that this might be my big break. It’s a huge show and it’s local, it’s an ideal scenario.

“I know it’s not the Darren Tetley show, it’s the Josh Warrington show, but in my eyes, it’s about me going out there and putting in a decent performance and getting noticed.

“It’s not about me getting signed up or anything like that. It’s about people seeing me box well and going away talking about this prospect from Bradford.”

Tetley, who has won all seven of his paid-for fights, rejected a shot at the English title this weekend to focus on impressing in West Yorkshire.

He needed five stitches in a cut from sparring recently but said that was not the reason he was not competing for a first belt.

Tetley added: “Say I had fought for the title and won it, then I’d have had to stay at that level. But maybe I’m not ready permanently for that yet.

“I’ve got to thank my manager Mick (Marsden) who knows what he’s doing. I’ve been on these little shows and now I’ve got this big fight on my doorstep in front of a full house.

“I’m not the main show but I’m putting myself under a lot of pressure because I can’t screw this up.

“I’ve got further than I ever thought when I turned pro. Everything from here is a bonus.

“It started off not really knowing how I’d get on. But now people are starting to take note and this is such a big chance to get myself out there.”
