BRADFORD Grammar School hosted both the West Yorkshire individual and team finals – and tasted success on both days.

Aliza Khaliq and Emily Mellor won the under-11 and under-13 girls' titles on the opening day to go forward to the English Schools' individual finals in the West Midlands in April.

Meanwhile, the under-13 and under-16 girls' teams won their competitions the following day, while the under-13 boys' team were runners-up.

The boys will play in the national last 16 in Blackburn on Saturday, March 21, with the girls featuring in their last 16 clashes the day after in Grantham.

A total of 60 pupils competed on the Saturday in six events, with three BGS pupils – Nicholas Miller, Joshua Poulsen and Nithila Sampath – finishing runners-up.

On the Sunday, 38 teams were competing, including six from the hosts, and all this activity meant that the senior gym and sports hall and Clock House hall were all in use.

The under-13 girls defeated Lady Manners, Bakewell 8-0 and the under-16 girls Springwell Community, Derby, also by 8-0, with one team in each section not turning up.

Bradford Grammar's under-16 girls were Hibah Mahmood, Sophie Yung, Madeleine Silberberg and Hannah Chaudry, while the under-13 girls were Aliza Khaliq, Emily Mellor, Melody Seifzadeh and Mahum Sheraz.

The boys under-13 team of Joshua Poulsen, Nicholas Miller, Karam Butt, James Bowmer and Pranav Balabhadra defeated Derbyshire's William Allitt School 7-1 and Ryecroft Middle, Uttoxeter 8-0, but lost 7-1 to Outwood Academy Valley, Worksop.
