SKIPTON AA

We will be holding our 108th annual meeting next Wednesday (8pm) but it will be at the Cross Keys pub on Otley Road (opposite the police station) rather than Skipton WMC. All members are invited to attend.

The Association has had a very successful year, with membership reaching its highest level for several years. In conjunction with another decent summer, sport has been good on all of our waters, with some record-breaking fish coming to the net.

Both the secretary and treasurer have decided to relinquish their positions after many years of service, and this has necessitated some changes to the structure of the officials which will be fully explained at the meeting.

The Association has been fortunate in finding several qualified volunteers for these positions but additional members will still be able to put themselves forward if they desire.

There are four proposals to be put before the meeting. These cover fish retention at Whinnygill Reservoir, the government of the Association and the remuneration of the officials (two proposals). At the conclusion of business, a free buffet will be available.

Sport over Christmas period was rather hit and miss, mainly due to the rapidly changing weather conditions – wet, windy and mild or still and frosty.

Flooding on the River Aire was once again a problem, and no anglers were seen at this venue as a consequence.

Perhaps the best place to wet a line was the local length of the canal, and especially the basin in the centre of Skipton. Perch, roach and skimmers provided some sport but the fish were generally of average size. The large perch normally associated with this venue at this time of the year have either gone elsewhere or have yet to arrive.

Prospects for this weekend also appear dismal, with the forecast of a succession of gales and heavy rain but generally mild temperatures for the time of year. Perhaps the canal will once again be the only fishery to see an angler.

No-one should be fishing club waters who has not obtained a 2015 membership book. The members match at Pilley's was cancelled when water was frozen. No attempt should be made to break the ice with objects that cannot be retrieved. A party of members fished the River Aire but only trout were caught.
