KEIGHLEY AC

Water levels have returned to normal and the River Aire continues to fish really well, despite falling temperatures. There have been reports of large numbers of grayling being caught on both red and white maggot, with the feeder method yielding the strongest results. One angler netted an astonishing 54 fish – mainly trout and grayling – in a single session between Kildwick and Silsden, while on the same day, further downstream, 36 fish were brought to the bank by a fellow Keighley Angling Club member. Last week’s River Aire competition at Utley was won by Ian Needs – more commonly known as Treacle – pushing Tony Greenwood into second place, with Darren Watson third. Notably, roach are returning to local swims and featured prominently at the weigh-in alongside chub and grayling. The canal remains unpredictable. There are strong swims on Silsden’s east side, where roach and skimmer bream are plentiful, although fish seem more docile along stretches closer to Leaches Bridge at Riddlesden. Keighley’s 2015 yearbooks are now available. Club secretary Dennis Freeman said any new members wishing to join now can take advantage of a free month if they choose to start fishing immediately.
