Picking up Sheffield's Mick Knowles en route proved an inspired decision by Heckmondwike, who were at Bury for their last Northern Fours and Junior League meeting of the season.

Racing was fierce, especially with Heckmondwike only being a point ahead of Manchester outfit Astley and Tyldesley in the Northern Fours table.

The contest went down to the last race, and reserve rider Knowles won to score four points, pushing them a point above Astley and Tyldesley.

Ten-year-old Tom Whitwam notched an exceptional 12 points - the same as veteran Darren Kent.

Scores: Bury Comets 73, Stockport 65, Heckmondwike 44 (Tom Whitwam 12, Darren Kent 12, Mick Nowles 11, Justin Naylor 9), Astley & Tyldesley 43, Bury Meteors 38, Hull 34.

In the junior race, Tom Whitwam was first overall under-13 with 16 points, Will Naylor getting 11 and under-ten Bella Naylor nine.

Heckmondwike host the Northern Individuals on Saturday at Firth park (12.30pm).

Training continues on Wednesdays (7.30pm-9pm), and for more information contact Justin Naylor 07799-367370.
