LAURA Trott has stressed she will still be working to support Lizzie Armitstead in the road race at the Commonwealth Games despite finishing ahead of her Team England colleague to win at the British Championships last weekend.

Boels Dolmans rider Armitstead – the London Olympics silver-medallist and defending champion – could only come third in the race in Abergavenny on Sunday after Trott (Wiggle Honda) overhauled her in a thrilling finale to claim her first senior road title.

Trott feels the triumph was a "big deal", but insists nothing has changed in terms of Armitstead being set to lead England's road effort at the Commonwealth Games, which get under way in Glasgow later this month.

Trott, who won double gold on the track at London 2012, told Press Association Sport: "It was a big deal for me - my first senior road race title, which is massive.

"In particular, for a track rider to win it, it was nice for me. It was good.

"But I think we will definitely still work for Lizzie in Glasgow.

"We rode that course at last year's nationals, and it is a really hard course and a proper Lizzie course.

"We will give 100 per cent to help her get the gold medal."

The 22-year-old is joined along with Armitstead – who claimed another silver in the event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games – on the England road team for Glasgow by Hannah Barnes, Lucy Garner, Dani King, Emma Pooley and Joanna Rowsell.

She will also be part of the track endurance group, with Armitstead, King and Rowsell.
