The martial arts gods were not shining on Bradford teenager Emelye O’Brien in the 45th North West Open Karate Championships.

The in-form Leeds Karate Academy member was in great form but was unlucky to be disqualified in her semi-final with what had looked like a well-controlled kick and had to settle for bronze.

Fortunately, her Farsley-based clubmates backed her up with medals, assistant club instructor Tom Little taking gold in the senior men's kumite and Joe Hart winning silver an injury earlier in the day ruled him out of the final.

Gold was also brought home by Stephen Sugden, who won the under brown belt senior men's kumite in style, while the men's team of Joe Hart, Tom Little and James Brown (pictured) taking a bronze.

Club instructor and former world champion Matt Price said: “Well done to all who took part, and especially those who medalled in what is the longest-running karate tournament in the UK."
