Having faced one former world champion last month, Keighley teenager Dylan Mitchell is in confident mood as he prepares to face another one today.

The 18-year-old amateur, who lost 6-0 to world No 1 Neil Robertson in the UK Championship at York, faces Steve Davis at Barnsley Metrodome in the German Masters qualifying.

It will be Davis’ first competitive action since he took part in the TV reality show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

The matches against some of snooker’s most famous names keep coming for Mitchell, who also faces Jimmy White tomorrow in the Haikou World Open qualifying at the same venue in south Yorkshire.

The former Oakbank pupil said: “I have had time to reflect on my match against Neil Robertson and I can take a lot of positives out of it.

“It wasn’t a 6-0 match because I was in a lot of frames and was quite unlucky.

“Even Neil said it was a closer match than that but it didn’t surprise me that he won the tournament because he and Ding Junhui have been head and shoulders above everyone else recently.”

Davis may not have been practising much after surviving 18 days in the Australian jungle and only recently flying back from Down Under.

But Mitchell is certainly not expecting an easy ride in the best-of-nine frames encounter against the 56-year-old six-time world champion.

“I am expecting to be facing Steve Davis at his best,” said the Bogthorn youngster.

“Playing Jimmy White will be even tougher but I am expecting to win both matches.

“What Mitchell Travis did at York has helped all of us amateurs to believe.”

The 21-year-old from Sheffield, who had only earned £722 from snooker before playing in the UK Championships, defeated world No 6 Marcu Fu and Norway’s world No 51 Kurt Maflin in reaching the third round and a £9,000 pay-day before losing to Ireland’s David Morris.

Victory in either of the qualifiers would send Mitchell through to the last 64 of the tournaments proper in Germany (January 29-February 2 in Berlin) and/or China (March 10-16 in Hainan) next year.
