Stuart McCall spent this afternoon watching DVDs of last season's games against Notts County and Macclesfield.

Just hours after seeing the new fixtures, the City boss wasted no time in doing some homework.

He explained: "It gets you in the mindset for the season. I know they will have brought in some new players - and Notts County have just got Jamie Forrester from Lincoln - but it's useful to have a look at how they played before and how we did."

City would certainly settle for a repeat of last season's encounters with Notts County when the Magpies roll up at Valley Parade for the curtain-raiser on Saturday, August 9.

A Peter Thorne hat-trick despatched them 3-0 in January, before three second-half goals sealed a come-from-behind double in the return fixture a month later.

Like most managers, McCall is happy to be handed a home start. It will bring back memories of his managerial debut last August, when Macclesfield interrupted his homecoming by forcing a 1-1 draw.

McCall said: "Funnily enough, I had the Macclesfield game out the other day and it was a great occasion coming back. But you hope for a home game to start off with, so we've got our wish.

"Notts County was probably our best performance at Valley Parade last season and we also played very well down there to come back from a goal down and win."

The Notts County fixture will be followed three days later by the much-anticipated Carling Cup derby clash with Huddersfield at the Galpharm.

"We couldn't have got any harder draw last year than Wolves away and this is a great one for us," said McCall.

"It does get the excitement going because of the rivalry between the two clubs and we will want to put in a better performance than last time (lost 2-0).

"Huddersfield are going to have a bit of money behind them and, with Stan Ternent's shrewdness, they will fancy themselves to do well next season."

Lincoln once again provide the Boxing Day opposition for City, although this time the game is at Sincil Bank.

There is no New Year's Day fixture because January 1 falls on a Thursday and the Football League decided that was too close to the FA Cup third-round ties the following weekend.

hang on a second - who promised there would be signings last week? no one did, just rumours on City website message board. they didn't make any promises to break!

there are two months until the season starts, so stop been so stupid in demanding all the signings are made!

do you really think stuart is spending his working days just sat on his backside watching DVDs, or do you not think watching old games might be part of the preperation? do you honestly think you have to spend every second chasing a target, or do you not realise it takes a while for offers to be accepted, meetings with players to be arranged and then time for them to make up their minds?

what I'm saying is, stop writing such moronic posts. think with your brain a bit, you are embarrassing to read.

Whilst Stuart was watching the DVD, I hope he noticed the Notts County midfielder- Richard Butcher.
He scored 12 goals last season whilst playing in a poor team.
Could be a useful addition to City team.

Mark Lawn has whetted the appetite for City fans by declaring: We've got more big names on the way.

oh dear... i read that article you told me where the 'promise' was made, there isn't any promise. it says signings are unlikely to be made until after Stuart gets back from holiday...it doesn't say they will be made the week he gets back.

well done mate, superb argument you made there

I think City will be employee a PR man to ensure that the statements are not what they may seem to the man in the street. Lets just sit back and wait and wait for the Big Name signings. Still not one coming forward and saying that they have contributed to the Fighting Fund. I assume that will be the next on the agenda to fleece the fans and take the talk away from new signings - wait and see, again.

i'm not begruding you for getting excited, just for getting angry when signings aren't yet made. it's only june, just be patient. even in that quote dave baldwin says he hopes to make signings.
as long as signings are all made in time for the notts county game that's what matters

Sort this poorly built site out quickly, the posts look poor, the layout is all wrong, the initial posted comment should be at the top and succesive comments following, it makes no sense like this. Sack the web designer. NOW. A monkey with an hours training could have done better, even Mrs Senseless may have managed a better go with his crayolas.
