Nix gets reward for faith in ability
 |
| Kyle Nix contributed a healthy eight goals from midfield to help earn him a new City contract |
Kyle Nix reckons his year out of the professional game was probably the best thing that could have happened.
Nix this week penned a new deal with City after an impressive first season which saw him bag eight goals from midfield, while only three players started more games.
It has been some transformation for the 22-year-old, who had found himself on the non-league scrap heap in the summer of 2006 after being shown the door by Sheffield United.
After battling through injuries, Nix was turning out for Rotherham side Parkgate in the Northern Counties Eastern League. It must have seemed a million miles away from what he wanted but Nix believes that time toughened his resolve to make it.
He admitted: "It was real men's football. It's all hustle and muscle - even more than you get in League Two - and it taught me a lot of things.
"It's hard when you're out of the (professional) game and a lot of people in that situation just give up. But I always had faith in my ability and I got that bit of luck when Bradford gave me a chance.
"But looking back at it now, that year in non-league might have done me good and there's no way I will take anything for granted because I realise what it's like not to be involved."
Stuart McCall, who had worked with Nix in the reserves at Bramall Lane, initially invited him to Valley Parade on a pre-season trial.
The midfielder's enthusiastic approach earned him another month and he has kept on impressing the boss - enough to beat last week's axe when McCall got rid of 13 of his out-of-contract team-mates.
Nix said: "Everything's gone so well for me; maybe not with the team because we didn't get in the play-offs but on a personal front it could not have gone any better.
"I thought there might be a few stinkers in my first season but, looking back, there haven't been too many games when I've been a bit inconsistent."
But despite his healthy appearance ratio, Nix feels he is a long way from being a fixture in the side.
"Since day one, I've had to do my talking on the pitch and in training and obviously it's worked to a certain extent because of the amount of games I've played," he said.
"But there is no way whatsoever that I'd say I'm established now. The gaffer is looking to bring in better players, so next season it will be even harder to get into the team.
"The competition will be tougher and I'll have to be on my toes. There's no way I'll take it for granted. You've got to set high standards and then maintain them all the time."

Totally agree with you, if we had another 10 with the same attitude, then we won't be far off the mark next seaon.
PS.
Have seen that we have sold 4263 season tickets (3307 adults). Is this good or bad at this stage?????

I agree with you both, his is a quality guy and his determination and a willingness to suceed shows on the pitch, so glad big Mc kept him on. In fact i couldn't agree more with the ones he got rid of, especially Johnson, he has been no way good enough but i thought he might offer him a new deal just because of the name & backround, but he did have the bottle to get rid. Im thinking a good season is ahead of us and thets before i have seen any of the new signings. Looking forward already, i hate the end of the footy season, 3 months of nothing to do, that means i will be dragged to the shops with the mrs. Arghhhhh.

I think thats just people who (including me) who want to keep there same seat. The offer does not finish untill 15th June so plenty of time yet. Maybe we need news of new signings to gee it up a bit?

When the signings come and I'm sure they will, then people will be flocking down to the ticket office.

I see that 'Shaun' still has the Rohypnol effect. I'd wake up if I were you Chris before he tries touching you.
Come back when your testes have dropped into place Shaun...and perhaps by then you will have learnt how to spell you name properly. Ask Mr Connery if you need some help.
Glad Nix has a contract. Who needs big names when Stuart can spot players like Kyle.

I see YAWN from Richmond has deemed it necessary to bring his in-bred, cousin loving comments on here again.
He seems obsessed with 6 months, must be what you get for animal tampering in Richmond these days.

shaun - please can you explain to me why you think it's so bad Conlon has only been offered a six month deal?
in my view it's good management and its completley logical, in fact it's brilliant because if Conlon is deemed surplus to requirements in six months we can let him go, rather than be stuck paying his wages for the rest of the year. If he's doing well and in the squad, we can offer him another six month deal which he will take.
Why do you consider this bad management? I genuinely don't understand where you're coming from

These comment threads are constantly being derailed by Shaun and Mr Sensible. Am I the only one who is starting to find them boring?
"his statement this week not to expect any decent players coming in" - this is not just a typical negative comment from Shaun, it is also a misrepresentation of McCall's comments - he never said he wouldn't be bringing in decent players, just that they might not be established stars and we shouldn't get our hopes up too soon.
Do you have reading comprehension problems Shaun - or were you deliberately setting up a straw man version of Stuart's comments? Are you stupid or are you deliberately and dishonestly trying to misrepresent other people's views?

"Conlon has only been offered a six month deal"
Not only that, but (like Clarke, Hecky, Thorne etc) he has signed for lower basic wages. These are good deals for the club and a sign that these players actually want to be at VP.

Its about time that clubs stopped submiting to demands from players for wages etc,Players should start realising that they should only get paid for the performance they put in.This is the ultimate reason that clubs go into admin due to mismanagement etc. Hear Hear Stuart set the standards!!!

The truth hurts Shaun. Great signing from Harrogate Town. Sorry not been on already but pre occupied with halifax Town. A bit of practice for the next one who fall further into financial disaster because of bad management. Get on down and get them tickets and don't forget a bit of advice - Pay by Credit Card.

maybe, just maybe it is i, who having pasted several postings on these sites come up with the daft inane idea that everyone is out of step on the parade ground bar me. i enjoy a tete a tete with certain scribes i.e. tyker. but get my laughs from the A.K.A. Shaun & Mr.Sensible. why? because these two posters certainly know how to get folk biting and also i feel sorry for anyone who feels the need to reply(myself excluded of course) also one lad stated that he was bored already the soccer season had finished. poor pathetic person he must be. we are in rugby league season and cricket has started, there is so much to do and see and if you have kids/grandchildren etc! even better.so forget V.P. for three months and come back refreshed in august.

just goes to show there is some talent in the non league scene, ive seen your new keeper a few times and he looks the part, but so too does Jon Worsnop who you let go,also BPA,s skipper Steve Connors in my opinion would make the grade in league football given a chance.

I personally don't think that Shaun, Skippy and Sensible post often enough. Their comments always factual and backed up 100% with figures and researched quotes, oh just a minute they're not are they, they are just puerile rantings from friendless, pointless beings. If anyone hasn't noticed, they can never pull a single figure or quote to make a decent point, it is always inane, worthless foolish, blase comments with no depth. Just humour them, as you would a child, they deserve no less nor more.

So Skippy if this is 'Our Club', given the totality of your negative comments, how do you think it should be run? Name Chairman/directors/m
anager/coach/assista
nt coaches/none playing management/staff/pla
yers first team, reserves, youth players, supporters trust, etc. Your vision, how you are going to cost it, are you really one of the Morrison clan who has enough millions to realise this project. If you cannot answer all of the above in a lucid and coherent manner (yes big words which may not feature in your vocabulary [opps another big word]). In the alternative just cease posting, and press the delete button on your presence on this board. "Hasta la vista, baby".

Don't call her baby for godsakes, within her warped mind she will attempt to twist it round to the fact youy mentioned the word baby and therefore must have an overly active interest in babies and small children. She (skippy) obviously has this thought closest to her frontal lobes and therefore has deigned we all think the same, these poor tortured minds just cannot acccept they are the abnormal and we the normal.
