Keith Lulia will heed Bradford Bulls Wake-up call

Keith Lulia admitted his first game of the year did not go according to plan but has promised to make more of an impact as his fitness increases Keith Lulia admitted his first game of the year did not go according to plan but has promised to make more of an impact as his fitness increases

Keith Lulia has vowed to bounce back from his nightmare debut when the Bulls travel to Wakefield on Saturday.

The close-season signing from Newcastle Knights lined up alongside Michael Platt in the centres against Wigan last weekend to make his first appearance in a Bradford jersey.

Wigan subjected Mick Potter’s side to a 54-16 defeat, their second heavy home loss in as many games, in what proved to be a harsh baptism for Lulia and fellow debutant Phil Joseph.

By his own admission, Lulia made little impact as Wigan dominated proceedings after Luke Gale’s early departure through injury, running in ten tries.

But Lulia, who had been reduced to the sidelines by a hamstring injury until last weekend, is confident of finding top gear as his match fitness improves – starting at Wakefield on Saturday.

The Cook Islands international, 24, said: “The Wigan match was my first game of the year, and I could have done a bit better, but that’s just how it goes.

“There weren’t many opportunities to show what I could do.

“We dropped a few balls, gave penalties away and did stupid things like not getting the ball in touch from penalties.

“A few things didn’t go our way but Wigan are a very strong and disciplined side.

“They go through their sets and make sure they complete them.

“They pretty much always had the ball and that’s what won them the game.”

Yet Lulia is relishing the opportunity to put things right against the Wildcats this weekend.

He is confident of making his mark against Richard Agar’s team, but is urging the Bulls to make sure they get the basics right.

Lulia added: “Last week against Wigan we didn’t complete our sets, we made a few mistakes, and there wasn’t much opportunity to get any quality ball.

“But we’ll just put the game behind us and move straight onto Wakefield.

“I haven’t seen much of Wakefield yet but I’m confident the boys can go out there with their heads held high on Saturday and show what we’re capable of.

“Wigan are one of the top teams and will be tough opposition for anyone but hopefully we can step up this weekend against Wakefield and I’ll get the opportunity to show what I can do.”

Meanwhile, Gale will see a consultant today or tomorrow to determine the extent of the injury he sustained against Wigan.

Although x-rays revealed no break, further scans have shown damage to the ligaments in his right ankle and he may require an operation, sidelining him for several weeks at least.

Manase Manuokafoa, Karl Pryce and John Bateman are set to line up for the under-20s at Wakefield tonight as they edge closer to first-team contention.

3 missed easy n basic tackles by the lad = 3 wigan tries.

I know we keep saying it, but I think this is a must win game - if we loose it will leave us in the same position as last season, and a set of demoralised players and supporters. I had such high hopes for this season, perhaps I was just got caught up in all the hype again.?

lets hope you are all wide awake against Wakefield then but I very much doubt it, as oddhspedballs says it does become monotonous; let your game do the talking and we will stop the moaning

Yawn.... Keith, we've heard it all before so many times, it's hot-air central up at Odsal. Same s**t, different day.

I think this has become a must win game with Wire, Hull Kr and Saints to follow. Thank god we beat Cas. We all know these players can play better than we have seen. Let's hope they start to click as it is still early.

Hi 'H', if we can't allow ourselves a little optimism at the start of the season then we never can. Agree that games like our weekend match have become 'must win' games as there are around 8 teams that look to be out of our league, albeit at this early stage.
.
You are right about 'demoralised players and supporters' - the atmosphere at Odsal on Sunday was dire. How quickly the dark skies gather over our stadium these days, is it any wonder?

You can't seriously be writing Lulia off on his first outing for the club and just back from injury?

The lads from Aus who used to post on here did try to tell us not to get too excited about our signings from down under but we would persist it putting them in the Danny Peacock Michael Withers mould. It happens year after year and we never learn. Accepting failure and thinking all will come right in the end is a very worrying trend at the club these days with both the management and many fans subscribing to the myth.I just wish some people would have the balls to complain when they are being fed a load of sh1te instead of putting up with this crap and having a pop at everyone who objects.

I hope MP has had the lads studying the Wigan game very closely because it will teach them how to play as a team.
At Cas the lads did start to come together as a team but on Sunday when Luke went off the lads lost their way and never recovered.
If the lads play up, at Wakefield the way they did at Cas then we should see confidence in the BULLS to start trusting each other to come up with the plays and we could win this one.
COM’ON YOU BULLS.

Spot on, as soon as you dare to criticise everyone jumps on your back saying you don't support the Bulls, it's because i support the Bulls and can actually see it as it is that i say something.

Hmmmm I'm not willing to put it down to injury- lulia's defence for the knights was exposed every week I just hoped super league wouldn't be the same. Yes he scored 6 tries but that was over 3/4 season as a stand in centre for macdougall. sorry but it's the sane old lulia- not the "proven try scorer" he was paraded as.

As if some of our performances aren't bad enough. A lot of people do not like listening to moaners stating the b leeding obvious. These negative types rarely come on here when we win, or if they appear it’s to warn against future doom and only feel fulfilled when they can say “I told you so, I would not have signed X, but Y player etc.” We all know our team is not the best in SL (hopefully top 8). However the players are the ones that get beaten up week in week out and play with injuries, they are the heroes not the armchair critics or the supporters on the terraces paying very little to watch a game. Instead of moaning get behind your team for a change. COYB

The players have got to be positive. Wakefield are no Wigan but that also means you cannot roll out the same excuses - need time to gel, top four side, too many well-established players, lost our star play-maker etc. etc. Wakefield had the guts, last season, to sack a well-thought of and, relatively, successful coach. Sometimes a side needs that sort of shake-up and wake-up. Forget about not judging till 10 games are up, the Bulls have to be up for this otherwise they'll have to shut down this blog-site and board up the gates to Odsal.
With Gale out, what is the half-back pairing going to be? I think Jeffries should play SH and recall Briggs from Featherstone. Use Sammut as an impact player from the bench. I would think using L'Estrange at SH would not be a good short-term fix but, there again, I'm not the coach so it is all down to Mr Potter. I think the faithful should get to Belle Vue and raise the rafters with their support as this is most likely the most important game, in the ongoing survival of the Bulls, in a long, long time.

Talk about stating the obvious. I'm not going to argue with you, if you are happy at what is happening at the Bulls and prepared to put up with this year on year thats up to you. If you want to bury your head when people criticise again thats up to you. If you want to berate everyone who is not prepared to shut up that's up to you. Meantime I hope the people who are REALLY passionate about the club will continue to complain untill we have a new coach and a chairman who stops patronising us with stupid statements of how well we are doing.

And of course moaning on the T&A forum will have the desired affect??? NOT

Complaining, moaning does nothing, solves nothing except putting a dour mood on everything - if you are that passionate write letters to the club, organise protests etc.....

However like the rest, you will do NOTHING

Those of us that have been around a long time see little things that remind us of the past. Reading the comments about Keith Lulia reminds me of a day at Odsal, the second game of the season having played York the previous week. You could have passed the hat round in the crowd and you would have had enough money to pay the fare back home for one particular player. Hopeless, rubbish, can't tackle were just a few of the remarks voiced by those that had been at York. The player went on to be one of the best players ever to pull on the Red Amber and Black and was up there with the likes of Ernest Ward and Trevor Foster. His name - Joe Phillips. Give the new lads a chance there may be a gem waiting to shine.

I am my no means writing off the lad. all i said was there were 3 1on1 easy tackles rto make and he fluffed them. I hope the lad does come good. From What I saw of him in the NRL he could beat a man with good footwork and he cant be that bad as Melbourne Storm offered him a deal.

But I remember all the criticism about those players when we signed them because we hadn't got Laurie Daley etc. I also remember the supporters on the old Bulls Message Board telling us that Leeds would be wonderful with Clyde, Mullins etc and we would not get anywhere signing a journeyman like Danny Gartner. Oh and why did we sign someone who had just got back from a season out with a knee injury when we could have signed half the Australian test side but went for Hape instead. Cheap option that would see us win nothing.

Mick Potter- cant motivate himself, never mind his players!
He bigs Bradford up pre match, saying 'we're going to do this,we're going to do that' .
At the end of the day, he'll be getting the sack, mark my words, Sheffield !!
