Bradford Bulls stand-off Jarrod Sammut doesn't pull any punches following brutal beating by Wigan

Jarrod Sammut has delivered a damning assessment of the Bulls’ thumping home defeat to Wigan and admitted: “It wasn’t acceptable.”

Sunday’s 54-16 reverse marked a second successive heavy loss at Odsal following a similar outcome against Catalan Dragons a fortnight earlier.

Sammut said he was left hurting after the performance and result against Shaun Wane’s team.

The Australian stand-off, a close-season signing from Crusa-ders, insisted there was no lack of effort but a collective failure to carry out the game-plan.

He said: “It was another defeat at home and it cuts deep.

“The effort was there but effort doesn’t win you games.

We call ourselves professional sportsmen but after the Wigan game we need to look at ourselves

Jarrod Sammut

“There were a lot of things that went wrong for us and it was very difficult to find any positives.

“We call ourselves professional sportsmen but after the Wigan game we need to look at ourselves.”

Sammut twice failed to find touch with penalties during the first half against Wigan but he also scored a brilliant individual try, racing 70 metres to cross the line.

Ultimately it meant nothing, as the Bulls went on to concede six tries after the break and ten in total.

Sammut admitted he took little consolation from his second touchdown for the club.

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how good that try was after a performance like that,” he added.

“After getting beat like we did, that try was the last thing on my mind.”

Sammut called for his side to make a vast improvement when they travel to Wakefield on Saturday.

“The time for talking is over,” he declared. “Every defeat hurts just as much but Wigan was our second home game and our second loss.

“Not just a loss but a heavy loss. We know what we’re capable of and to come out and perform like we did is not acceptable.”

Bradford’s cause was not helped by the loss of Sammut’s half-back partner Luke Gale after just ten minutes.

He sustained ankle ligament damage and will undergo a scan this morning which is expected to confirm that he will be sidelined for several weeks.

Sammut added: “It was a massive loss to lose your key playmaker and No 1 man but we are a professional outfit and should be able to continue with the game-plan regardless.”

Asked what needed to change ahead of this weekend’s trip to Wakefield, Sammut replied: “A lot of personal ownership, a lot more controlling the game defensively and being more patient with the ball in attack.

“Don’t second-guess ourselves, just stick with the plan and complete our sets.

“We are a tight bunch, we do fight like hell for one another, but the Wigan performance showed the complete opposite of that.”

Ben Thaler will referee Saturday’s match against the Wildcats, with Ian Smith named as video referee.

I rate Sammut he missed a couple kicks to touch but a fine try he is saying the right things here ! poor poor performance as a team on Sunday but we have a winable game on Saturday so lets move on.

Sammut couldnt tackle a cream bun. Sammut couldnt kick a ball 20 metres twice. When he tried his first kick for touch it was 0-0 by his 2nd it was 0-6 by his 3rd when he found touch it was 0-16. Nuff Said

Wakefield is a should win game but it is by no means a certainty and whilst it is not a must win game that is the mentality the Bulls should take into the game.
What used to be "fortress Odsal" now appears to be "floodgate Odsal". With Warrington next up at the bowl, there is no respite and you would forgive the players for having a reluctance to turn out at Odsal given that most of their problems seem to be cruelly exposed in front of the Odsal faithful.

Wildcats a should win game?????

I'm not so sure just look at what they have done in their first 2 outings

Very impressive win in the first outing all be it against Widness & they did not embarass themselves against KR only loosing by 12 to a team that took a point of Saints (but for a silly late penalty would have taken the 2)

Wildcats are a re built team this season but I'm not aware of them spouting the same excuses "it takes time to gel" etc

Wakey have yet to embarass themselves to the same degree we have & at home I fear they may just nick the 2 points

I sure to god hope they dont as her in doors is from Wakey & I will never hear the end of it especially as they took the 2 points in the same fixture last year

Don't care how good his try was (and it was good) there is NO EXCUSE for missing touch. As someone who has jogged around a rugby pitch once or twice I know how little things like that affect you. Heads go down. Don't need to get down the other end of the field just make sure.
It will not be easy on Saturday make no mistake. But if we play anything like we did at Cas we have a chance.
Can't bring myself to think about Wire coming to Odsal!!

So, once again, we have yet another player telling us that they went onto a rugby pitch and failed to follow a game plan they had been working on all week but without giving us any real reason why except for a bunch of the same old excuses.

*
If I was the Chairman, I would want to know why I have, either, a coaching team who find it impossible to drill in a game plan that the players can follow or, why the players find it acceptable to receive a salary from one of the most successful clubs in the SL era and one of the biggest in the sport, when they are not doing an essential and basic part of the job they are paid for - simply unacceptable.

*
Either way, it is absolutely appalling, not the first time we have heard it (which makes it even more shocking) and confirms to me that, we once again have a team of players and coaches going absolutely nowhere.

*
We're in for another long season (as if I didn't know it already).

We need the win at Wakefield before this season spirals out of control. We have much better players than Wakefield (at least on paper). The problem is that it is not being shown on the park. Maybe a sports psychologist is the answer. Any which way, the commander and captain of the Bulls' ship (Messrs Hood and Potter) have a duty to steer us to calmer waters. I have never had any faith in Peter Hood's maritime ability but Mick Potter is not retiring after this season and needs to show he still has what it takes at this level of rugby league. The clay is there and ready. Do we have the person to mould them (a Potter perhaps - groan!!)?

I know it's an I told you so statement but I have said it before the season started, everyone will be sick of Sammutt before long. The guy is nothing short of frustrating. He will score a magnificent try, as he did, and his next 10 moves will have everyone baffled. He may be homesick but he'll never be as sick as I was when I heard we'd signed him.

What a crazy unfair post from the king of 'i told you so' that line is so tiresome now, please retire it for everyone's sanity.
.
So signing him made you sick did it? you must be a really poorly person. He had a poor game on Sunday, so did at least another dozen Bradford players.
.
Murphyslaw, your better than that, please be more constructive.

Hang on, when he missed touch, we were in the game...and half time were still in it. And there's no way you can slate Sammut for that dismal outting. We had one halfback and on the bench 3 Forwards and a Hooker. Yeah, he's off the cuff...but so was Sean Long...he's more likely to break a defence than hinder one.
If anything the pack is a disgrace. Our props (Burgess aside) couldn't bust a paper bag, the backrow is simply too lightweight and our loose forward is like a third prop. The backs got no ball (AGAIN!) because the forwards are getting blitzed and until something is done to stop that, we're gonna get this scoreline every week, whether it be Saints or Salford. Kopczak & Hargreaves aren't gonna put a team on the back foot...and it's ok rolling Burgess off the bench after 20mins but (as we've all seen!) the 20min spell after half time is when it's gonna fall apart. We should have Kopczak and Scruts to start...one safe and one impact, then Hargreaves/Manuakafo
a and Burgess off the bench and someone PLEASE move Langley to Second Row!!!

And on this post...Sammut doesn't have to be a solid defender if the pack do their job. Not to mention our abysmal excuse for a Fullback!!!
Since Kearney signed his new contract he's done the best part of naff all. His positioning is dire, his defence is woeful not to mention it took him two weeks to catch a bomb! I'm not a big fan of Paul Sykes (understatement!) but I'd rather have Sykes at Fullback and move Kearney to 6 and Sammut to 7. Make him earn his mega bucks!

Actually, scrub that, I'd rather have Platt back there!!!! It's an embarrassment when Crookes can get from one side of the pitch, to the other, cover 70m and make a tackle before Kearney or Kear can catch them!

Agreed Van Bellen. Kearney had a very good game at Cas. And, on Sunday, he made the Crookes try by kicking it through and he scored his own try. I know he didn't have the best of games on Sunday but who did? The lads were outplayed.

Also, Wakey have only played two games so far, Widnes and Hull KR, whereas we've had Catalans, Cas and Wigan. It's no surprise that Wakey haven't embarrassed themselves yet.

We should get the two points on Saturday.

you obviously dont watch any of the matches, watch do you expect him to do when he is on his own with 3 plus more attackers running at him. Everytime we have a injury in the halfs everything that is positive comes threw Carney i.e the kick on sunday.
I think if your going to moan on about anyone in the bulls team look at the impressive defence of Platt or Walker. They both have the amazing ability to hug thin air and let players stroll past them while there checking there i phones or something!

I think Sammut will be a great player for us the team will get better, Wigan will hammer Salford,Widnes, Wakey ect because they have along with Wire these finest team in super league. We have a team of good individual players that need coaching, guiding & moulding & for me Potter & his coaching team are to blame he is too much of a nice guy who genuinly thinks he`s doing us a favour being at Odsal. Bring in a quality number two to owork with Potter sacking him is not the best way forward.

At no point did I slate Sammut. The plain fact is he missed touch - twice! Not good enough at our U9s never mind first grade. Did you go to the game? They scored the first set after he missed touch. If thats not heads going down then what is? I like Sammut - brings something a bit different to the party - but PLEASE don't put him in the same league as Long. Miles apart.
Tom is a good prospect, but on Sunday he put the ball down in his first THREE carries. No good busting tackles when you don't have the ball in your hands!
Don't know whats happened to Scruts. I thought he was a tough lad. Put my 8 yr old up against him at the moment!

I obviously do. And yeah focus on the Try he scored and one he setup. Ignore the Try they scored after half time when he was running in the wrong direction, and the fact he couldn't catch Pat Richards and had to rely on Crookes coming from the opposite flank to hunt him down...he was tickling Richards at one point!
And he may look good against Cas, but where is he with the likes of Wigan & Catalan...you know? the teams we should be competing with? In attack, he's great...no denying that, he can sniff a Try or a chance. But he's Fullback and bottom line, if they break the line (which they do frequently!) are you confident he'll make the tackle? because I don't think I could mention one memorable one-on-one tackle.
