Former Guiseley ace Davidson joins Bradford Park Avenue

Park Avenue hope to have Alex Davidson available for tomorrow night’s game against Whitby Park Avenue hope to have Alex Davidson available for tomorrow night’s game against Whitby

With the fixtures in the lower divisions of the Football League affected by the freezing temperatures for a second weekend on the trot, it was no surprise that there were blanket postponements in the semi-pro game.

None of the area’s nine clubs on the non-league ladder saw any action for a second consecutive Saturday.

Bradford Park Avenue will be hoping it is a short lay-off and they can get back on the pitch tomorrow night.

Their weekend foray into Cheshire to play Northwich Victoria at Nantwich Town’s ground may have been shelved but they are scheduled to play two midweek games – starting tomorrow with a visit from Whitby in the Evo-Stik Premier Division.

Avenue may not have been busy on the pitch over the weekend but there was some action off it as they completed the signing of Alex Davidson from North Ferriby United.

Davidson – and his brother Peter – began the season in the Blue Square Bet North with Guiseley.

“We have signed Alex but it has yet to be confirmed if he will be available for the Whitby game, if indeed the match goes ahead,” said Avenue press officer Lewis Sale.

“We will find out today if all the paperwork has gone through in time for him to be in contention.

“He is another good signing for us that adds trickery and pace up front.”

If the Horsfall Stadium pitch is playable and he is available, it is unlikely that he will be eligible for Avenue’s Wednesday night fixture, with Avenue due to host Davidson’s former club Ferriby in the quarter-finals of the Doodson Sports Cup.

Even if the temperature rises from the sub-zero conditions of the weekend, tomorrow’s game is not guaranteed to be on.

Horsfall Stadium tenants Albion Sports were due a home game in Northern Counties East Division One on Saturday but were frustrated by a postponement due to a frozen pitch.

A sudden thaw could result in the playing surface being waterlogged.

Albion were not the only ones thwarted as all 18 games in the NCEL fixture-list – nine in each division – fell foul of the weather.

That meant Brighouse, Thackley and Liversedge suffered frustration in the Premier Division, along with Eccleshill in the lower tier.

The postponement of Guiseley’s home game in the BSBN followed a Friday lunchtime pitch inspection so that visitors Solihull Moors were spared a wasted journey from the midlands.

It was also costly for the Lions as they lost second place in the table to neighbouring rivals FC Halifax Town.

The only game in the division to survive saw Colwyn Bay host Halifax and a 1-0 win for the Shaymen took them above Guiseley.

Steve Kittrick’s men may be third and three points behind their neighbours but they do now have two games in hand on them.

Farsley’s Evo-Stik Division One trip to Harrogate Railway Athletic and Silsden’s game at Glossop North End in the NWCL Premier Division were also postponed.

Tonight's game v. Whitby Town is off. Next game is a League Cup tie at North Ferriby (he may be Cup-tied). Next at HOME on Saturday.
