Defender Matt Fry challenged to earn longer Bradford City contract

Newest addition Matt Fry will add bite to the Bantams back four, according to Phil Parkinson.

The left back has signed for the rest of the season after being released by West Ham at the end of last month.

With a decent pay-off from the Hammers, the 21-year-old is thought to have come cheap. He fills the gap left by Luke O’Brien, taking over his number three shirt, after spending the last week training with City.

Parkinson said: “Matty is strong and an out-and-out defender. He is very competitive and enjoys defending.

“He had an injury up to December so hasn’t played a lot of games. But he’s had a couple for the reserves lately.

“I’ve always been keeping tabs on the situation and with more games getting called off, I want this squad to be as strong as possible.

Teams with the best squads will cope the best during the backlog coming up

Phil Parkinson

“It’s going to be crucial. Teams with the best squads will cope the best during the backlog coming up. We need to work harder for clean sheets and he will help us do that.”

Six-footer Fry can also play centre half, where he first caught Parkinson’s eye while on loan at Gillingham two years ago. The City boss took him to Charlton for half a season where he played 25 games at left back.

Parkinson said: “He’s been up here and had a good look round. He’s seen what we’re trying to build and wants to be part of that by earning a longer contract.”

Fry will be training again this afternoon after City’s game at Wimbledon was frozen off. Leeds have agreed to let them use their indoor facilities at Thorp Arch.

Parkinson said: “We haven’t got somewhere ourselves like this and we need to keep the players training. You read comments from other clubs in the lower leagues and everybody has the same problem.

“Leeds have very kindly allowed us to go over there. It’s a big area and we will have a good session to get ready to go again for the Port Vale game on Tuesday.”

City were two hours into their journey to London yesterday when they got news of the postponement. A new date has not been sorted yet but it will add to the glut of midweek games over the next two months.

Fry-up huh ?, doubt anyone will get the pun, cheap as it is.

How much you paying me then ?.

So Parkie has decided to divulge further in the market rendering his statement a few days earlier, useless. Stop telling porkies and just select from what you have!

Lawn should have his company logo emblazoned above Fry's name, can't get better marketing than that.

looks to me as though Threlfall's days are numbered:PP clearly likes 6 foot plus defenders who can put their foot in.

POSSIBLY ALSOE BUILDING FOR TEH FUTURE BUT, IF SO, WHERE DOES KOZLUK FIT IN? especially as we seem to have Ceip now available at right back and with Ramsden getting his fitness back:seems alos that Mitchell is never going to get a run at right back either and is side lined even further with this signing.

So please do tell us Shaun, which players is not "on his way through"?

Every player at every football club is on loan whether it be for one month, three months or three seasons. A player contracted to a club can still leave at very short notice so the value of a long-term contract is not that it commits a player to a club for the long-term.

I would also like to remind you of your attitude to the club when they did dish out a few longer term contracts i.e. James Hanson...don't remember you congratulating the club.

Short-term loans are a fact of life. On the other "Fry" story, one poster shows that nearly all of our players are out of contract at the end of the season so what is the difference?

TVOR, Shaun and others will take the negative view of anything that the club do without any thought or reason at all. It is very boring.

Tyker, cheers for the heads up on tickets for Hockney. Friends in low places ensured that my trip to London wasn't wasted and the exhibition is excellent. Great to see something so well received and positive coming out of Bradford with people from all of the world queueing in the freezing cold to get in.

Errmm... Oh, you must be up for an award - for typing with your ankles? If I could have changed your ridiculous moniker, you'd have been yawnfactor10 for the last 18 months -approximately the last time I read one of your banal posts from start to finish. Quit whilst you're ahead pal.

Here's hoping for a "City Fry-ing High" headline in the next few months.

On a totally different football matter:
Interesting to hear that Luis Suarez nows says he 'made a mistake and apologises for his behaviour before the match v Manchester United.'

The FA should inform him that THEY would like to apologise for their mistake ..in only banning him for eight matches...by giving him a further ban of four matches!!

Does anybody know which two recent reserve games this guy has played in ?
I can only find two for west ham in March 2011 and nothing since.I believe he had a knee injury - shades of Benson.
Good luck to the lad - hope he does well for us and he has fully recovered and is fighting fit.
His main position is central defence and left back his secondary position.

DID THEY PLAY ANY GAMES BEHIND CLOSED DOORS MAYBE?

Let us hope he is in the Reid class and not another Duke or Fagan

That would make sense; you would anything more than one sentence boring due to your limited attention span and complete lack of understanding of anything to do with anything.

I note that you have absolutely no comeback to anything I posted but then you clearly struggle with facts.
