McCall reaction to McLaren's Rovers return

Paul McLaren is poised to return to Tranmere following his Valley Parade exit.

The former City midfielder, who yesterday cancelled his contract, is on the brink of a move back to Prenton Park just a year after leaving the League One club.

McLaren has been offered a two-year deal by new Rovers chief John Barnes and it is understood he will take a sizeable pay cut.

The 32-year-old’s City future had been thrown in doubt since the club announced they were slashing the wage budget by up to £700,000.

Macca is a very talented footballer... he had some excellent games for us but then again some very quiet ones as well

Stuart McCall

McLaren was believed to be the joint highest earner along with Graeme Lee, who last week signed for Notts County.

He made 35 starts last season, scoring three goals, but City fans did not see the best of him.

Stuart McCall said: “Macca is a very, very talented footballer, no doubt about it. He will be the first to admit he didn’t reach the heights he hoped for, especially at home, where teams came and clamped down on him with three in the middle.

“It reminded me of my time at Rangers with Paul Gascoigne. I’m not comparing the two as players but the scenario was very similar, with Scottish Premier League teams flooding the midfield to keep him quiet.

“Macca had some excellent games for us but then again some very quiet ones as well. But I’m not surprised that two or three clubs from League One had been on to us about him.

“I’m disappointed to lose him, as I was about Graeme Lee. I know it had to be done from the budget point of view but both lads will be missed in the dressing room and on the park.”

McLaren was hugely popular during his previous two-year stint with Tranmere and was voted players’ player of the year during his second season, when he also finished with the most goal assists in League One.

His departure has helped ease the cash constraints on McCall, although the City boss is still waiting to find out if he will see any of that money for further team building. He needs two new central midfielders as well as a goalkeeper.

McCall plans to give the whole squad a run-out in tomorrow’s opening friendly against Burnley at Valley Parade.

Guiseley striker James Hanson joined training for the first time yesterday and will line up with four other trialists – Jordan Hadfield, Grant Smith, Steve Williams and teenage midfielder James O’Neill, who was released by Birmingham.

McCall, who will field all his new signings, intends to swap the side around completely at half-time. But he feels the players are all ready for a game.

He said: “It’s the fittest group we’ve had at the start of pre-season since I’ve been here. The test results proved that as well as the training and I’ve been pleased with how they have come back.

“We had a little 11-a-side game yesterday with three halves of 12 minutes and there was a good tempo to it.”

Burnley boss Owen Coyle, like McCall, plans mass changes but the Premier League new boys will parade record £3million signing Steven Fletcher.

The Scotland international striker, bought from Hibs, will be joined by new defenders David Edgar and Tyrone Mears.

Coyle said: “Come the game we are going to be rusty. We’ve only had four full training sessions. It’s just a job of getting the legs going again. I’m sure there will be a lot of mistakes but it will be good just to get up and running.”

Good news that McClaren has gone, but with mutual consent. How much did we have to pay, to clear him off the books. Surely we had to pay him compensation.

Let's gamble on getting a few more young strong players. All our players seem to be on the small side, I remember last season, when Brentford came, when all the team seemed to be 6 ft + and strong, young and fast.

We either compensated him or told him he would rot in the reserves (bit of black mail). However dont suppose we will ever find out!!

Thanks to the T&A for the pics of McLaren. As I sit in the Kop & he never comes within yards of the penalty area I didn't know what he looked like. Good move for him though. Strange that he can be so moderate for us & yet a club from a higher division (albeit his old club)still wants him.

McLaren is a good player, but didn't suit the hustle and bustle of League 2 football. Had we played with a 5 man midfield and allowed him space on the ball, I am sure we would have seen the best of him.

The only comparison I can make is with strikers. You wouldn't expect a fox-in-a-box type player to be successful in a team that plays long balls to a lone striker.

McLaren had good vision and good passing ability, but didn't like the physical side of the game. A bit like Hoddle instead of Ince. Doesn't make him a bad player though!

Good luck McLaren.

p.s. At the end of the season, we had 4 players we needed to get off our books due to wages. Two have now agreed to leave, one has offered to take a pay-cut so he can stay and show his worth and the other has been anonymous in his silence. Which one was the Bradford City fan that 'always wanted to play for his hometown club'? Exactly!

We heard non stop from Brandon when he signed and throughout his injury about how much he wanted to be here playin for City for him and his family, how refreshing it would be to hear from him now that he would play for the club he loves for less cash.. Come on Chris lets here from you,, lets see how much you want it!!

Brandom will NOT be taking a pay cut!!

So he came to City for the money then? The only reason he agreed to join us was because we offered him enough to pay for his 'commitments'. Having seen his house, I don;t think he needs the money for his mortgage, so I can only assume he pays most of it into a pension.....or to William Hill esq. LOL

Is this the same source that told you Brandon would be 'pensioned off' last season?!?!?

McCall says he didnt want him to go and all at city will miss him well i certainly wont and he'd be in the top 3 to get rid of along with lee and clarke well 2 out of 3 aint bad

no he doesn't need the money for a mortgage but for other liabilities and personal running costs.

never said he would be pensioned off-- an insurance write off: City could not get that one past the insurance company medical people so it did not happen.

All he needs is another ankle injury whilst playing and that would be it.

I agree with what people are saying about Brandon -it is clearly all about the money - I am sorry but we have paid him a big salary for him to be injured - not his fault I know, but surely he must feel guilty he has been taking everything and given nothing so far in his Bradford carreer, he must feel he OWES the club something!!
Also couldn't help noticing in the article that the lads played THREE HALVES of 12 minutes, that doesn't bode well for working out wage budgets etc!!!!

Rumour was before Brandon left for his holidays he was told by McCall he didnt feature in his future plans.

Its almost certain we wont see Chris on the field of play for us again.

You do write rubbish tyker. Ok i said 'pension' instead of 'insurance', but the scenario is the same.
Fact is, your 'source' was talkin boll0cks and the option to write him off via an insurance pay out was NEVER an option! You do this every year, traipsing out nonsense u cant back up.
Brandon was never going to be written off as am insurance job and we both know it. As for having bills to pay, don't all footballers? If he doesnt play much next season, this may be his last year earning as a footballer. Surely it would make more sense to take a cut of 40% and get an extra year out of Mccall.

what?

if he is not fit and not wanted why would City ask him to take a 40% pay cut and offer him another year on the books.

was he not one of the four the club were wanting to off load?

i think you are well aware that he is reported to have a certain life style which costs him far more than the average working man!!

A) I can see why maybe hes gone there, like furman he probably wants to play at the highest level.

B)How did Chris Hutchings get the managerial job there????

C)Why dosnt the T&A do something about how bad Parkers reporting (or lack of it) is.

McCall rates Brandon highly, hence his decision to offer him a 2yr deal on good money. The quote above "Macca is a very talented footballer...." was relating to McLaren BUT I was referring to Brandon offering to take a pay-cut and increase his contract by a year. We have done this type of thing before with Windass & Wethers.

We would benefit by reducing our outgoings (on his wages) by 40% and he would benefit by having the security of a further year.

If he is good enough, then McCall should be offering this as a solution.

Its a shame about jones i was hoping we might sign him.Although i'm more than happy with the signings made so far i do worry about a lack of creativity, its ok having the 3 strikers but with no wingers and no playmaker in the middle how are we going to make the chances.Time is running out only 4 weeks left now

He's probably still paying for that sports car he wrote off a couple of years ago, that was on hire purchase.

Remember that crash over Eccleshill way Chris, where you denied all responsibility?

Fact, but it didn't involve me as I'm with E-Sure, calm down dear!
