Newton to end Odsal stay

Terry Newton today admitted he is leaving the Bulls at the end of the season.

The Great Britain hooker will depart Odsal after four years at the club, having failed to agree a new deal.

Bradford had discussed a 12-month extension with Newton, who will be 31 when Super League XV gets underway, but the player hopes to tie down a longer contract elsewhere, with several Super League clubs vying for his signature.

Rumours circulated last weekend that he had already signed with Wakefield Trinity Wildcats for 2010.

However, although confirming today for the first time he is on his way out, Newton insists he has not yet decided on his future.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my four years at the Bulls,” said the talented rake.

“It’s a great club to play for and I’d like to thank everyone there for their help and support during my time there. “I am sad to leave but at this stage of my career I feel I need the security of a two-year contract for my future and that of my family.

“Wakefield are showing some interest, as are other clubs, but I’ve got to make the best choice for me and my family, both to prolong my career but also thinking about silverware. I’ll have a big decision to make pretty soon.”

Newton joined Bradford from home-town Wigan Warriors at the end of 2005 and has made 92 appearances, scoring 27 tries.

A combative and experienced dummy-half operator, he has become a pivotal part of the Bulls operation but has ultimately failed to quench his personal thirst for success.

Despite arriving when the Bulls had appeared in five consecutive Grand Finals and were newly-crowned champions, Newton has been unable to pick up that elusive Super League winners’ ring.

Bradford have not returned to Old Trafford once during his spell at Odsal and he admits that has been the one let-down in his time there.

“I came here expecting to win some trophies so it is a bit upsetting that has never happened,” he conceded.

“I am surprised. When I joined the club there were some big names here – Shontayne Hape, Lesley Vainikolo and Joe Vagana – and signing for a club like that, you expect to win something somewhere down the line.”

Newton believes a regular turnover of players during a major period of upheaval on and off the pitch at Odsal is the main reason behind a lack of silverware.

He feels all clubs need to follow the likes of St Helens to achieve glory.

“When you look at St Helens, they’re the best team over the last few years and you don’t see their personnel changing as often as other clubs,” he said.

“I think you have to have stability and players there for a number of seasons so you can learn how to play with each other.

“Saints have had that. They’ve never shipped many players out or brought loads in and that’s where other clubs let themselves down.

“I don’t think they show trust in a lot of players and sometimes think it’s easier to go and buy new players rather than work with the ones they have.”

The chances of the Bulls ending their barren run are slim this year with them languishing down in 12th spot.

But Newton maintained: “I’ve a lot of respect for Steve McNamara. He’s a great coach with some great ideas.

“As a team, we’ve been a bit low on confidence but, if we can string a few wins together, who knows, we could kick on and get into the play-offs.

“Once in there, it’s a whole new competition. We’ve just got to concentrate on getting there.”

Newton has been ever-present this term – a proud record – and feels fit and ready for the fight ahead.

The Bulls venture to Hull KR on Sunday needing victory more so than at any point this season.

“It’s never easy going to any Hull side and it’s going to be a massive test for us to come away with a win,” admitted the former Leeds Rhino.

“But we’ve trained well and there’s no reason why we can’t go over there and get it. They’ve had a bit of a patch themselves, as we have, and we just need to turn up and show the right attitude.”

Bulls chairman Peter Hood paid tribute to Newton and said: “Terry has given four years’ outstanding service to Bradford Bulls and he leaves with the best wishes of everyone at the club. “We were prepared to consider a one-year contract extension but Terry wanted the security that a two-year deal would offer him. “On behalf of the club I would like to express my thanks for his contribution to the Bulls and wish him every success for the future.”

He's had 1 year of outstanding service and that was this year...but for the last 3 he's done sweet FA.

I'm expecting a high turnover this year.

"He's had 1 year of outstanding service and that was this year".
Does that mean he has only been playing to his potential to get the offer of a contract elsewhere? Based on that, it looks like most of the other members of the first team will be remaining as they haven't been particularly impressive.
But, if you are right Adey, a large turnover of staff means next season will be no different to this. You cannot simply buy (or in this case contract) success. The side needs stability. Losing half the first team will only produce another lacklustre season. It's time to blood more of the Academy as they ARE committed to the club for the forseeable future.
However, no mention yet of when Peter Hood and Steve MacNamara are leaving!

Here's one to pass the time with. Which of the current squad will be here next season and which players will replace the ones who go?

Yes, thats exactly what I'm saying. When a players future is uncertain the majority always play better. When they know they're going, the majority of them throw in the towel. Thats why I'm convinced that Tadulala is leaving and so is Burgess.

I would rather see a large turnover of staff and us bring in players who WANT to be here than pay the lazy and bone idle who would rather be elsewhere...frankly it's not fair on the fans.

I do agree that we should bring up some from the academy. Hyde can clearly command a game, Donaldson looked very useful in his very short spell on the pitch, Crossley is a big unit and looked promising in the offseason. We need players who A. Are likely to stay and B. WANT to be here!

Newton,Burgess, Solomona, Jeffries, Tadulala and Cook to leave. Possibly Platt but very much doubt it.

A few names banded about but not all will need replacing. I think Heath L'estrange is very likely if Burgess goes to Manly. Craig Wing I definately can't see but would be a revelation at 6. We've already signed Hall for Prop and I really can't see the pack bolstered more than that. To be honest, we wouldn't need much. A decent hooker, a stand off, maybe a utility back who can play centre and wing and that's about it.

Terry newton has been a legend for us over the years. I will be sad to see him go, but now maybe we can sign rinaldi up and see how he goes with godwin. yes ok he has reached the top of his peak now has newton but still can be a asset to any club. A true legend of the club and i hope him well for the future. Cheers Terry

This whole thing stinks !
Macnamara and Hood you should hang your heads in shame.
Tadulala one of our best signings of the last 3 years is leaving.
Burgess our crown jewel, the one who we should be building our side round.
Menzies the biggest inspiration to the rest of the players.
Halley farmed out on loan 'co Macca thought him not good enough, yet thought Platt was ???
now look at him, our best back at present.
Newton, says it all really above, Turning his back 'cos we can't offer a longer deal, who we got to replace him ? Rinaldi or Godwin ? both O.K. players but not a patch on a confident Newton.
What can we do to stop this mis-management. These two morons are ruining our once great club.
Enough is enough.

A legend?

Sorry but have we been watching the same Terry Newton for the past 4 years?

Prior to this season he was lazy, slow and lacked inspiration. We had Lowes at 9 and he could turn a game, we had Henderson at 9 and he could turn a game...if Terry Newton was so good then why hasn't he got a winners ring and why can't he inspire a victory once in a while?

Not being funny here, but tads although think he is a quality player and scores some fantastic tries has not loked interested this season, his body langauge on the pitch is the worst ofany of the bulls players. saying that he he does get on wi his job on the field wen needed but think if his body langauge was to change and he looked more interested then some of his silly errors he makes would change. as for Newton, he has done an ok job for the Bulls at a time wen the squad as a whole is going backwards unfortunately. Think we should be looking o sign a younger/quicker no 9 as this position is getting moreand more important to the team, so a bit of youth wouldnt go a miss. wud also get rid of goodwin, put effort in on pitch but is neva going to hold down the no9 shirt.

Gumshoe says...
9:01am Thu 9 Jul 09

Not too concerned about Newton going as he has been very ordinary for me and not a patch on Hendo when he was here. I feel Rinaldi has more to offer us at 9. I agree with BBARL6 that Godwin should go soon as well, yes he puts effort in but is far too injury prone due to his tackling technique, if he could put that right then may be different.

Lets give some of the academy lads a lash up to end of season and see who does good in key positions, hooker, HB, centre etc

Would be very sad to see Tad and Sam leave and also BJ actually who I think has been pretty decent for us this year so far. If the above are leaving, who coming in apart from Lestrange that has been rumoured?

Again massive disruption in the team as there has been for all Mac time in charge in building 'his' team which has not worked!!

Tez summed it up in saying we need to keep the same team together with little changes to be like Saints, not a quarter of team out and 4 and 5 new players in as they will need 12 months to settle in most cases.

Security word: weak-like, yeah like Mac's coaching

looks to me like a top wage earner going as teh club cannot offer him a better deal: a high turn over of staff tells me that funds are tight and players can get better deals anywhere else.

All the years newton has played for us i have never seen him play a game as well as Hederson.
If we had kept him then we would have kept some decent pace, but now i like the idea of rinaldi and Godwin. Two players with speed urgency and good minds. Newton seemed to only have one of them three things and often lost that one during matches also.

Affraid to say if we let Burgess go no matter how much money may be offerd or him then it will be the last nail in te coffin for me with the bulls. total lack of forward thinking, dnt c the likes of cas letting thier young guns leave the club, they build a team arndthere international young players.
Also this cud ruin Sam yeh he is a quality player but not showing his true protential at the mo and the Auzzies wnt take it easy on him, it cud back fire for him. needs to get couple more years under his belt in SL andthen think of moving on.

Sort what? Fact is Newton doesn't have a winners ring for a reason...he's had one good season and for the past 3 years done naff all.

How can people be getting upset over this? he's past his best, which he left at Wigan, and frankly doesn't do enough in the key position he plays. He only deserved a 1 year deal and cos he didn't want it he'll go to Wakey....it's not like we didn't try to keep him.

Chris Walker, a Gold Coast Titans centre who made six State of Origin appearances for Queensland, and the Bradford stand-off Ben Jeffries are thought to be among the Crusaders' targets.

Just a couple of threads back, Macca says he knows nothing of Newton leaving. Just wonder what will be the next statement to come out of his mouth?

It's becoming obvious why Bulls are not performing. There are too many players with their minds elsewhere and a coach who wouldn't regongnise the truth if it jumped up and smacked him in the face.

The club is in turmoil.

newton has done nothing for us in the time he has been with us, he has lost that fire that made him a good hooker, not a patch on hendo so i wont be sorry to see him go, a 2 year deal would have just been ridiculous.
if Sam goes then good luck to him, no point keeping hold of someone that wants to play elsewhere, he's another that has done nothing this season, brilliant last till his injury, but now other players have sussed out how to deal with him so he's not the same force.
agree with you OSB about legends, newton def isn't one of them!

another case of horrendous management. On top of this if they let Sam go I seriously will have to consider whether I am prepared to carry on paying for a season ticket (This after almost twenty five years of going home and away). I am not prepared to ply my money into the club to watch the idiot from hull and Mr Hood carry on destroying the club. WE MUST ALL PROTEST ! If we do not then this sad demise will continue. The Head Coach and Chairman are cancers within the club ruining it very quickly. Anybody want to join me at the next home game? I am happy to arrange it. All it will take is fans making themselves heard.

protest all you like!

the license which was granted had caveats and it looks like the club needs to take some drastic action to meet certain financial requirements imposed by the Super League:this involves off loading top earners as fast as possible and bringing in cheaper options and cashing in the "family silver" players without committing any of that future transfer fee into anything other than general administration funding.

The future is not bright and I think the club does beed a rapid overhaul with significant fresh funds being injected by outside parties.

In these straightened times that may prove just one step two far.
