Make-or-break week for Yorkshire, admits Moxon

Pressure? What pressure? That is the view of Martyn Moxon as Yorkshire go in search of two trophies in the last fortnight of the county season.

A win against leaders Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, starting tomorrow, will put the White Rose right in the hunt to win the LV= County Championship title in the final round.

And, with a semi-final tie against Warwickshire at Scarborough in the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition to come on Saturday, there is a real sense of something special brewing for Moxon and company.

It is a far cry from the relegation fights of the last two seasons.

“We are going into the defining week of our season,” said Moxon, the county’s director of professional cricket. “Two wins will see us with a chance of winning two trophies.

“Notts is definitely a must-win game, but we will not treat it any differently.

“The pressure at the end of the last couple of seasons has been much bigger than it is now.

“You’ve got to enjoy the prospect of us being in a Lord’s final and possibly going into the last game with a chance of winning the Championship.”

Notts are 22 points clear of second-placed Somerset and 25 clear of Yorkshire, although they failed to make use of a game in hand on both sides last week when they lost to Durham.

Moxon added: “We have played good cricket all season, and there is no reason to change now.

“In some ways the pressure is off because nobody was predicting that we would do anything too dramatic this season.

“We have already proved people wrong, so the players need to go and enjoy themselves.”

Ajmal Shahzad has been made available by England to play in the fixture. He may not be able to finish the match, however, and Moxon may have to name a replacement.
