Anthony McGrath has admitted that his future as Yorkshire's captain is not cut and dried.
The 33-year-old batsman has had a difficult first season back as the club's skipper with the county failing to make an impression in any one-day competition and fighting against relegation in the LV County Championship.
He was boosted over the weekend with a crucial four-day win over fellow strugglers Sussex at Hove - a triumph that went a long way to securing their top-flight future.
But he is still not sure whether avoiding the drop, which Yorkshire will do if they gain six points from Wednesday's clash with Hampshire at Headingley, will be enough to help him keep his job.
"The board will probably decide that at the end of the season," said McGrath. "I've said many times that I'm very proud to be Yorkshire captain, but the decision might be taken out of my hands. I'm not sure.
"I would definitely like to carry on as captain, but at the end of the season is the time to reflect.
"From two or three months ago, there's been a lot of people saying a lot of things. You're only human, and those things get to you after a while."
The perception is that McGrath, this year's beneficiary at Headingley, has also suffered form- wise in the Championship.
He has scored 738 runs from 14 matches, including 211 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston in May, but he has still managed to score ten runs more than he did last year with one more match still to play.
Should Sussex beat Nottinghamshire with a maximum of 22 points, Yorkshire will need six points to be safe.
Meanwhile, Yorkshire's second team beat Lancashire in a tense Trophy final at Scarborough today.
Farsley's James Lee took two wickets and scored 39 not out to bowl Lancashire out for 142 and help chase down the runs for the loss of eight wickets.
