Yorkshire had their tails up at lunch after Matthew Hoggard’s display with bat and ball ensured they remain on top at Taunton.
They took maximum batting points against Somerset inside the first hour of the second day and claimed an important scalp with the final ball of the session.
Resuming on 375 for seven, Hoggard and Ajmal Shahzad comfortably brought up the fourth batting point, Hoggard taking the lead and finding three boundaries on his way to a score of 26.
The third of those brought up the 400 as his powerful on-drive split the field and raced to the fence, before he was eventually dismissed when chipping David Stiff straight to Alfonso Thomas at mid-on.
Steve Patterson offered only a couple of loose shots in his successful attempts to assist Shahzad, who was unbeaten on 27 at the end of the innings.
Patterson eventually flash at Stiff and saw the ball taken comfortably from a thin edge by Craig Kieswetter behind the stumps.
Stiff added his third scalp of the day moments later to dismiss last man James Lee for two as Yorkshire were bowled out for 438.
Marcus Trescothick looked in ominous form on an unbeaten 27 at the interval but, after finding more movement than is traditional at Taunton, Hoggard picked up the wicket of Arul Suppiah for 17.
He edged to a bit of trademark swing and guided the ball to Joe Sayers at second slip and at lunch Somerset were 51 for one, trailing by 387.
