Yorkshire have failed to take advantage of bowling first as Somerset seized the honours in the opening session of their Specsavers County Championship match at Taunton.

The home side went to lunch at 110-1 (34 overs) after Yorkshire skipper Andrew Gale exercised his right to bowl first as visiting captain.

Experienced duo Marcus Trescothick (57 off 97) and Chris Rogers (32 off 79) moved the score along steadily after paceman Steve Patterson had earlier bowled Tom Abell for 8.

Trescothick feasted on anything too full, and his innings has included 11 boundaries.

Yorkshire were forced to make three changes to the XI that beat Surrey last week.

David Willey has been ruled out of bowling for six weeks after picking up an abdominal strain, while Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow prepare for international duty.

This has given young York batsman Jack Leaning, Stamford Bridge all-rounder Will Rhodes and wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd a chance to stake their claim in the team.
