JONNY Bairstow and Joe Root entertained Yorkshire fans royally during an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 128 after the defending champions had slipped to 45-3 against Surrey at Headingley.

Day two had started badly for Yorkshire after the cheap loss of Adam Lyth, Gary Ballance and Alex Lees, including two to West Indian Ravi Rampaul, as they reply to 330.

Lyth was trapped lbw, Ballance chopped on and Lees was caught behind off Tom Curran.

Bairstow then led the way with a magnificent 30-ball fifty with ten fours and he and Root, also in positive mood, took the score to 173-3 after 29 overs at lunch.

Their stand lasted a little under 19 overs, with Bairstow reaching the interval on 81 and Root 47.
