TWENTY wickets fell on a remarkable first day of Yorkshire’s Division One game against Durham at Scarborough.

Andrew Gale’s men were slightly the happier side at the close of play after they had fought back to dismiss the visitors for 156, this after being bowled out for 162 themselves. At stumps Yorkshire were ten for no wicket in their innings.

At close of play umpires Jeremy Lloyds and Nick Cook said they had seen nothing in the pitch to cause them to take further action.

The majority of the 5,300 spectators at North Marine Road will be offering grateful thanks to the White Rose seamers after they led their side’s remarkable fightback.

Yorkshire's decision to bat first on a wicket offering pace and plenty of bounce didn't look good. Andrew Hodd was leg before to Jamie Harrison for nine beforeAlex Lees played on to Chris Rushworth for two.

Skipper Andrew Gale hit a couple of pleasing boundaries before edging Rushworth to Scott Borthwick at slip for 12 to leave Yorkshire at 27-3.

Things got worse when Jack Leaning followed for 16 when he nicked John Hastings to Gordon Muchall at slip.

The same catcher removed Gary Ballance for six off Graham Onions and Yorkshire were 54-5 after 18 overs.

Glenn Maxwell played some pleasing drives to pilot a recovery to 91-5 before he was then caught behind by Michael Richardson down the leg side off an Onions bouncer for 36.

Yorkshire’s unhappy morning session was completed when Adil Rashid was caught at third slip by Jack Burnham, again off Onions,on the stroke of lunch to reduce his side to 94-7.

However, Yorkshire hit back with both bat and ball in the afternoon session. A fine last-wicket stand of 67 between Tim Bresnan and Ryan Sidebottom enabled Yorkshire to recover from 95-9 to post 162 before Bresnan and Steve Patterson reduced Durham to 29-3 in reply.

First Graham Clark cut Tim Bresnan straight to Ballance at backward point. he was followed to the pavilion by Mark Stoneman after he hooked Patterson straight to Bresnan at long leg, the fielder taking a good tumbling catch.

When Gordon Muchall was leg before to his first ball from Patterson, Durham were deep in trouble.

Those initial breakthroughs were built on in the evening session when Liam Plunkett produced the ball of the day to bowl debutant Jack Burnham for nought.

Replacing Plunkett, Sidebottom bowled his left-arm with typical accuracy. He trapped Borthwick leg before for 19 to leave Durham on 91-6.

The 37-year-old followed up with the scalps of Hastings and Ryan Pringle, who fell to Rashid’s fine running catch when he had made a hard-hit 40.

Leg-spinner Rashid had earlier chipped in with the wicket of Jamie Harrison who was leg before for nought and Sidebottom completed his fine figures of 4-44 when he had Rushworth caught by Maxwell at slip.

Steve Patterson took 3-16 off his 11 overs.
