JONNY Bairstow and Andrew Gale have warned against rising expectations surrounding Yorkshire's teenage sensation Matthew Fisher after a sparkling start to his county career has got tongues wagging.

Fisher has played in all three forms of first-team cricket for Yorkshire – yet he does not even turn 18 until November.

The fast bowler is currently completing his A-Level exams but he took time out of studies recently to take 5-22 from 3.2 overs on his Twenty20 debut against Derbyshire at Headingley.

He made his Championship debut against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge last month before facing Warwickshire at Edgbaston, with Tim Bresnan speaking about how he expects Fisher to graduate through to England colours.

But wicketkeeper-batsman Bairstow said: "We are all very pleased for him with the way things are going but he knows that it's going to get difficult. It's a competition, no matter what.

"Whoever you play against, the word will get round about different ways he bowls. We're well aware of that, and he's well aware of that, but he's going to be a very good bowler."

Gale cannot hide his admiration for the player who is currently ruled out of Championship action until June 5 due to exams.

The Yorkshire skipper said: "Fish is going to be special – but he has got a long way to go as a 17-year-old before he gets his credentials as an England player. He has a lot of hard work to do before then.

"For a 17-year-old lad to come in and hardly look nervous, you don't see that very often at all. It was special (against Derbyshire).

"You give him the ball and he just bowls a good, solid line and length and seams it around with a bit of swing on it at 85mph. The lad's, no doubt, going to be a star.

"We've seen what he can do already in the four-day games (against Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire). He didn't look out of place at all in those. It's about us managing his workload going forward."

Yorkshire must not know whether to laugh or cry at the minute because, seemingly, every time they produce a young player, he is spoken about as future England material who will be taken away from them.

Gale quipped: "My philosophy is that they can't pick all 11. They've got to leave us with some players – and I'll certainly be about!"
