SUSSEX have signed former Yorkshire bowler Ajmal Shahzad from Nottinghamshire.

The ex-Lancashire seamer, 29, was granted an early release from his Notts contract and has signed a three-year deal at Hove.

He said: "It has come about quickly but I'm just delighted to be down here and I hope it brings out the best in me."

The former Woodhouse Grove pupil, who played for Windhill in the Bradford League, has over 200 first-class wickets to his name and also averaged 29 with his aggressive lower-order batting for Notts last season.

Sussex's professional cricket manager Mark Robinson sees parallels with another sometime international on the club's books.

Robinson said: "He is a cricketer of great ability and who hasn't yet fulfilled all of his potential. He can bowl with a yard of pace and has the potential to be a genuine bowling all-rounder.

"We hope he can have a similar impact that Chris Jordan had and fulfil the same role helping balance the team."

The signing follows that of left-armer Tymal Mills from Essex as Sussex continue refreshing their pace attack for the new season.
