Yorkshire moved within eight wickets of becoming county champions for the first time since 2001 today after dominating their match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Nottinghamshire, already forced to follow on 329 runs behind, reached tea on the third day on 45-2 after being dismissed for 203, despite a determined last-wicket stand of 63 between captain Chris Read and last man Harry Gurney.

But after Gurney became Jack Brooks’ fourth victim of the innings, Nottinghamshire followed on 329 runs adrift and there were 32 overs remaining for Yorkshire to claim the final eight wickets in the final session.

Yorkshire were given a flying start to their second innings, with Ryan Sidebottom winning an lbw decision against Steven Mullaney with the first ball, and then Brooks dismissing Michael Lumb in the next over when he edged low to Gary Ballance at third slip.

But Yorkshire’s position could have been even better had Hales (4) not been dropped by Adam Lyth at second slip and Taylor (1) missed by Ballance at third slip before the interval, which Nottinghamshire reached still trailing by 284 runs.
