Prolific openers Alex Lees and Adam Lyth shared another century stand after surviving several dropped catches to put Yorkshire in a strong position in their title-deciding County Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Having won the toss – Joe Root is captaining the side in the absence of the suspended Andrew Gale – Yorkshire made the most of ideal batting conditions to reach 118 without loss at lunch on the opening day.

But to reach their commanding total they had their fair share of luck, with Lyth given a reprieve before he had scored after edging the second ball of the match behind off Luke Fletcher only for Nottinghamshire wicketkeeper and captain Chris Read to fumble the chance.

Lees was also given two escapes, firstly on 20 when he gave a sharp chance to Riki Wessels at short leg from Gary Keedy’s first ball andthen on 45 via the same combination.

But they overcame those errors as Lees went on to score an unbeaten 55, including eight fours and a six, while Lyth reached lunch on 62 having hit 11 boundaries.

Yorkshire entered the match leading Division One by 26 points from Nottinghamshire, knowing they would be crowned champions if their opponents fail to claim three more points than them during the four days.
