ALTHOUGH I'd done quite a bit of captaincy prior to playing first-team cricket, I really enjoyed my first taste of being skipper at that level in our one-day friendly against Sri Lanka A at Headingley on Thursday.

We had quite an inexperienced side and I think everybody equipped themselves really well. But it was disappointing that we didn't manage to get the win having been in some decent positions.

Leading a side in one-day cricket with the different powerplay regulations certainly keeps you ticking along mentally.

I was lucky that I had six bowlers to use, along with Adam Lyth's off-spin if needed. I had plenty of overs to play with, so I didn't have to juggle too many around, which was a help.

Also, when you have Adil Rashid bowling awesome leg-spin, and in a batting powerplay too, that also negated another issue of maybe having to bowl one of the younger lads at that time.

At the minute, he's probably bowling the best that I've seen from him for a long, consistent period of time.

He's taken four wickets against a Sri Lankan side with some full international experience, and if they're not going to play spin well, then there's not going to be many who will do.

I've seen him bowl this well in patches before but this season he's nailing it pretty much every game he plays. He's got every delivery you can think of, and there aren't many batters who are playing him too well.

I think he's the best spinner in the country on current form. He's been ridiculously consistent, and then you have the added bonus of him being able to get you hundreds down the order with the bat.

If England are wanting another spinner, I wouldn't look much further than Rash.

But, as a Yorkshire player and supporter, let's hold onto him until the end of the season and then he can go away with them somewhere in the winter!

Going back to the captaincy, I don't think it's something I'd go looking for, although I'd happily take on the responsibility if it ever came my way.

I've got aspirations myself in the game, which starts with winning games for Yorkshire. Further down the line, if it did come in my path, I wouldn't shy away from it, but like I said I wouldn't be intentionally looking for it.
