On the whole, we were pretty pleased with our efforts in last week’s Championship draw against Somerset at Taunton.

I don’t think we could have asked for much more on a placid pitch.

Had we won the toss and bowled first, maybe it would have been different because there was more in the pitch for the bowlers early on. But, on reflection, I think we did all we could to win the game.

I felt I played okay for my 34 in the first innings and 47 in the second.

I got a couple of starts without getting a hundred, which is not ideal. But at least I had some time in the middle.

I’m feeling confident with my game at the moment, but I know that I’ve got to turn that confidence into performances. Hopefully I can go on in our game against Northamptonshire at Headingley this week.

They’re a side who had a good season last year and have some very good players, so we are expecting it to be a tough contest.

I scored a century against them in a friendly at Wantage Road before we went down to Somerset and I’m pretty sure it’s the reason why I have a new nickname in the Yorkshire dressing room. Haydos!

That was former Australia opener Matthew Hayden’s nickname. And I, as a left-hander, scored a run-a-ball hundred like he did so many times.

That’s what the lads have been shouting at me and I guess it’s a compliment. Mind you, I don’t think I’m anywhere near as good as he was.

It’s not a bad nickname I suppose, but I need to get a bigger chest if I’m going to be more like him.

When I started the column, I said it would be good fun to talk about one of my other passions – football.

As you may or may not know, I’m a Leeds United fan. It’s nice that somebody has finally taken over the club and is going to put a bit of cash in. Hopefully we can end the season well.

If we can get a few signings in, then we should be able to put in some better performances next year.

There’s a fair bit of banter flying around with the Yorkshire lads, with the likes of Andrew Gale supporting Huddersfield and Martyn Moxon supporting Barnsley.

It’s all good fun at the end of the day but I’m afraid it’s all one-way traffic if you’re Martyn at the minute.
